The sites which do mortgage comparisons charge fees for being included
in the search results (as you point out) or are brokers for several
companies.
The open directory submission is free however
http://dmoz.org/Business/Financial_Services/Mortgages/
(add URL) this isn't a comparison site but at least people are looking
for mortgages here, and dmoz results are served at Google, and
numerous other sites.
.
Search strategy:
.
refinancing forum
://www.google.com/search?q=refinancing+forum&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&start=130&sa=N
.
forum mortgage is right for me
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=forum%20mortgage%20is%20right%20for%20me&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wg
.

I hope that helps,
