I would guess he was in transit back to the United States from the
Solomon Islands as he left on December 21st and arrived back in the
United States "..in early January 1944"

Will this suffice?

Hi,

Not much, but I did locate:

"He was forced to give up command and was sent home to Chelsea Naval
Hospital near Hyannis Port."
http://www.studyworld.com/newsite/ReportEssay/Biography/AmericanPresident%5CJFK__His_Life_and_Legacy-322663.htm

There are no references included to show where this info came from.

and...

"So, late in 1943, treatment to repair a ruptured disc from the
collision began. He spent the early months of 1944 cooped up in the
Chelsea Naval Hospital."
http://www.belmont.k12.ca.us/ralston/programs/itech/jfk1.html

Hope it helps someone else find a bit more detail.

Regards,

"Kennedy left the Solomons on 21 December [1943]"
Medal of Freedom
http://www.medaloffreedom.com/JohnFKennedyMilitaryStory.htm

"Kennedy left the Solomons on 21 December and returned to the U.S. in
early January 1944."
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq60-2.htm

"Ensign Kennedy entered Room 207 Chelsea Naval Hospital June 11, 1944
until December 26, 1944."
Chelsea Naval Hospital
http://olgp.net/chs/d1/navalhospital.htm

But no word on what ship carried him from the Solomons back to the U.S.
