Though still very controversial among historians, there's growing
evidence that the early contacts between Europeans and American
Indians led to a drastic depopulation of the New World due to the
spread of disease.  It's an extension of the ideas presented in Jared
Diamond's book "Guns, Germs and Steel" and is best exemplified by
Charles Mann's 2002 article in The Atlantic Monthly titled "1491":
