Question ID: 410632
I am currently employed in a full-time permanent position as a VB.NET
/ SQL Server 2000 programmer. In order to (hopefully significantly)
increase our household income, I am looking for a second job (i.e. in
addition to my day job) also as a VB.NET / SQL Server 2000 developer.
I have 2.5 years of programming experience.

Although I am pretty proficient in "normal" job searching techniques,
I need some (very) good leads as to how to find such a position (i.e.
PM / night shift / work-from-home) - whether Internet resources or of
the "brick and mortar" type. I know computer programming is not an
area that often has night shifts ? but there must be some?
Telecommuting positions must exist ? but I don?t know how to find
either type... I live in the Chicago area; my zip code is 60659.

I will tip for a particularly helpful/useful answer. Please don?t
hesitate to ask for any clarification necessary.

Thank you very much,
Eliezer

Hello,
I actually do some of the work part-time that you are looking for.
I can tell you a few good websites to find part-time at home work. I
use all of these and some are better than others. I'll give you as
much as I can on each. Good luck!

www.rentacoder.com
I use this one the most. It has several new posts everyday. They
charge a percentage of whatever you bid on a project but it's free to
sign up and search projects. I've found that you have to bid
competitively due to overseas companies bidding lower than you'd
probably expect.

www.contractedwork.com
This one has fewer new projects daily than rentacoder. You can view
open projects but you have to pay to bid. Here's the payment options:

1 Week Trial $4.95 Subscription.
Basic $14.95 Monthly Subscription.
Gold $24.95 Monthly Subscription
Gold Plus $34.95 Monthly Subscription.

The site has details on what each one means.

www.guru.com
This one is nice because it emails you open projects when they are
submitted and meet your criteria. It has more structure on what
projects you can bid on based on your skills. It's free to sign up
but you pay on a per project bases as follows:
1. Professionals pay us a five or ten percent project transaction fee.
This fee is based upon a project's payment value and is deducted from
the professional's payment for the project.
2. We also offer subscription-based Guru memberships to professionals
who want to have privileged access to projects and employers.
Professionals with the Guru stamp on their profile paid a subscription
fee to obtain special access to employers' projects.

www.elance.com
This is probably the most popular but also the most expensive. It's
actually gotten cheaper and a free account will let you see some
projects it's very limiting. They have packages from $5 to $30/month.
This would be worth the money if you think you'll do a lot of smaller
projects.

The above I all have used but these are also available but I don't use.
www.sologig.com
I've seen this one around but the cheapest package is $78.75 prepays
for 3 months. Probably not worth it if you're just starting out.

www.monster.com
I'm sure you've heard of monster.com. They have contract jobs as well
as full-time. I don't usually find too many so I've stopped using it
for now.

www.getacoder.com
I believe this is fairly new. Haven't used it yet. It doesn't have too
many projects out there but you can view them for free.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Darren
