I would like to find wilderness jobs that are available. (Interships,
Temporary Assisgnments lasting longer then a month). I cant afford to
spend 4-5 grand to places of these so only internships and positions
please. In areas of
Idaho, Wyoming, Canada or anything relating to the woods. If you
reference the book "Indian Creek Chronicles: A winter Alone in the
Wilderness" By Beter Fromm. You'll notice that he is in charge of
guarding salmon eggs for 7 months in the wilderness. Something of this
job nature I would like you to find out. The stuff I was able to pull
up on my extensive research was resort jobs of that nature. I would
not like to do that. Wilderness Surivial Camps would be nice to work
for of that nature also. If you could please find out any contact
information, or website information of who I could call for a position
like this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, joshuam,
I am working on your question. Do you have any outdoor/wilderness
experience? Must it be a paying position or are you willing to
volunteer as well? I have quite a bit of wilderness experience, having
worked for many years in Alaska as a Wildlife Biologist. Many of the
types of jobs you seek (like the salmon monitoring positions) require
state residency, at least in Alaska. However, there are a lot of other
fun positions in the west where you may not be totally alone in the
wilderness, but can still enjoy hiking, fishing, etc.
Am I right to assume that you want to do this only in the summer, or
are you willing to take time off from college? Also, must these
positions be in the West, or would you consider other states?

I was in boy scouts for around 4-5 years of my life. I love the
outdoors and have always wanted to be in a wilderness like alaska
canada idado or basically where it snows. It does not have to be a
paid but then again if its not paid somewhat then I'll have to save up
some money in order to pay for supplies and such. I would even go as
for as take residency in a state to do it but dont know how long u
have to be a resident and how to do it. It also does not have to be in
the summer. I am willing to take off time from college in order to
pursue my dream. I'm refreshing this question around every 30 minutes
so I'll quickly respond if you have any further questions. - Also - It
would be nice to do watching on salmon eggs it does not have to be
alaska but the thought of being in a wilderness all alone is what I've
dreamt about for oh so long :)

Joshuam,
This will take me quite a bit of time. I also will not be able to
find the perfect situation for you. I am trying to compile resources
and examples for you, but you may have to take some initiative to
write letters and ask some of the organizations if they have volunteer
or paid internships.
I may have to work on this for several hours, so please be patient, okay?

You say you will not be able to find the perfect situation for me?
What do you mean by that? You stated earlier that indeed in Alaska
there were such things as salmon egg watching and I commented that I
would retain residency if need be. I can write the letters that is not
a problem but figuring out what I'm writing about and who I'm writing
to is. You have been very helpful so far so take as long as you need.
There is no rushing needed I would just like as much information as
possible. I also don't want to come off as pushy and rude so don't
take my comment above anyway to that extent. It's been a dream of mine
for a long time and I would just like it to become a reality in the
somewhat near future.

Thanks! Josh

Joshuam,
You have stated: "You say you will not be able to find the perfect
situation for me? What do you mean by that?"
These jobs are few and far between. I am not the employer. I am a
researcher. I can guide you to where you might be interested in
applying, but there may be 200 applications for one Fisheries Tech 1
position. And, you may not have the necessary qualifications.

You have posted this question at $35, for which a researcher will get
75%. I have invested several hours already and do not want to risk a
rejection because I have not secured employment for you.
Take a look at the following organization, which probably offers the
best bet for you besides state Departments of Fish and Game. Your
desire for a northwestern location is hard to satisfy - nevertheless,
give it a look:

STUDENT CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

Conservation Internships (323 records)
http://www.thesca.org/con_int.cfm

Conservation Corps
http://www.thesca.org/corps_exp.cfm

Fire Education Corps
http://www.thesca.org/pdfs/fireflyer.pdf

I have a few more ideas, but cannot guarantee your satisfaction!

You will not get a rejection, do not worry about that. I would like to
see your other ideas... The links that you have posted are almost
exactly like I want. Paid room/board and its an experience in another
place other then LV. If you could get some contact info or something
in relation to salmon eggs though it would be great... unforunatly the
biggest tip I can give you is $30. So if you could please spend a
little more time on this it would be greatly appreciated. If you have
any more questions don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks again,
Josh

Hello, joshuam!

The following compilation of resources should give you a good start
toward finding a remote wilderness internship position. I have run
across many more opportunities, but they center on outdoor adventure
camps, fisheries or habitats located in the midwest or the east coast,
or have too much social contact. I have added a few "Adventure Job"
positions on the bottom of my answer but I know this is not really
what you are looking for.

Basically, you should write to any and all agencies that interest you
- even if they currently advertise no positions. There are many places
that will use your services, but they may not be able to pay anything
other than provide a tent and food essentials. (One such listing is an
example I have provided below, ("a position you can beg for") which is
really advertised for University of Idaho students, but may allow you
a place!!)

US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE - ALASKA
======================================

"Working in Alaska."
http://alaska.fws.gov/internettv/workwithustv/workingtv.htm

Click on the link "for Temporary and Summer Employment"
"Each year we hire temporary employees to collect biological data and
support our biological programs. Applications are accepted in October
or November and employees are selected from these applications
throughout the following year. We also hire Park Rangers to assist
visitors and provide interpretive programs. Ranger positions are
advertised individually as needed. Temporary positions are advertised
through USA Jobs."

You might be interested in following up with the contacts in this
brochure for Fisheries Science Internships in Alaska through the US
Fish and Wildlife Service. The brochure is for last year, but there is
a good likelihood that such positions exist from year to year.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH ALASKAN FISH AND GAME DIVISIONS
================================================================
For information and contacts, please read the following article:

"Future Biologists Get Hands-On Experience," by Nancy Long. Wildlife News

** "All divisions and sections have employed interns: Sport Fish,
Subsistence, Administrative Services, Wildlife Conservation, Boards
Support, Commercial Fisheries and the Commissioner?s Office. Each is
responsible for their local intern and education programs. Students
are encouraged to contact the fish and game division and regional
office for the location or subject of interest they wish to pursue."
Contact information for each ADF&G division, region, and regional
supervisor may be found at:

On a tamer note:

If you are really interested in working with Salmon habitat, you could
do something along the lines of these opportunities in California from

Good luck!

The information you provided was great. Yes it didn't "satisfy" me
like you told me it would but it was more then enough to give me the
kick in the right direction. I've always found Costa Rica an
exceptional place.. I'll try to look around for some material for
that. Again... I apprecate you taking the time to answer all the
questions I had :)

Thanks,
Josh
