Running XP Home Edition how do I set it up so the e-mail does not
automatically show the contents/open. As I understand this is what
notifys spammers I have opened their e-mail. Even if I hilite it to
delete it the e-mail opens.

Outlook Express 6.0 with the recent service pak installed.

More important than your operating system is what email client you
use. Outlook Express? Outlook? We can't really help without the answer
to that question. Open your email program, and hit Help-About and tell
us the exact version you're running so we can provide an educated
answer. :)

Try View-Layout and uncheck "preview pane".

Then, don't CLICK to delete, RIGHT-CLICK and choose delete to delete
from the list without opening.

I think that'll do it for you.
