Google Experts Question:
Greetings! About two months ago, while trying to backup my 600 MHz
Compaq Computer (Windows XP Home with Service Pack 1) onto a tape in
the OnStream 30GB Parallel Port Drive using 1Vision's 1Safe, I got the
message: "A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down
to prevent damage to your computer.
Invalid_Kernel_Handle
If this is the first time you have seen this Stop Error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these
steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed?
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software??

Previously tape backups went without a hitch for about four months.

I completely uninstalled 1Safe, PFSVIEW, and the OnStream Drivers,
and shut down the computer. I attached the OnStream 30GB Parallel Port
Drive to the parallel port, turned the OnStream tape drive on, and
booted up the computer.

Upon bootup, the computer found no new hardware. I had the computer
search for new hardware but could not find any. I think that, perhaps,
some place in the registry, there is a reference to OnStream or one of
its drivers, and therefore, Windows thinks that there is no new
hardware.

 I also tried the following:

1) Start ? Control Panel ? Add Hardware Wizard - Next
2) I then clicked the Yes, I have already connected the hardware. Now
I clicked Next, and a list of Installed Hardware appeared. The only
items I am unfamiliar with are:
  WDC WD100BA
ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive (WDM)
  Media Control Devices
3) One thing I might try later is to uninstall and let the system
reinstall these. I also could try uninstalling and reinstalling the
ECP Printer Port (LPT1) to which I attach the OnStream Drive.
4) But at this time I selected ?Add a new hardware device? and clicked
next. On the next screen, I clicked the "Install the hardware that I
manually select from a list" radio button, and clicked next. The next
screen shows a list of common hardware types. I selected Tape Drives
and clicked "Next".
5) The next screen shows no devices and with the message: Unable to
find any drivers for this device.)
6) I then clicked Have Disk and, on the next screen, I clicked Browse.
7) I selected the folder with all my OnStream and 1Safe programs and
drivers. And the file epatap2k.inf could be seen in the large upper
pane. I clicked on it, clicked Open and OK.
8) I then got the message: "Select Device
"The specified location does not contain information about your hardware. OK
9) Out of curiosity I then tried steps 1-8 with the Tape Drive turned
off. I got the exact same results.
10) I am able to use this same OnStream Tape Drive on my IBM Windows
XP Pro system to backup files with no problem. (So what I did was send
the files from my Windows XP Home Computer to my Windows XP Pro
Computer (via an Intel Anypoint wireless network) and backup files
successfully using 1Safe on the Windows XP Pro Computer.

Before I try various things and (possibly) mess up my computer, what
is the best way for me to proceed. Thank you very much in advance for
your help. This is worth much more to me than the $25 I am offering
here for the answer.

Sincerely,

Michael Fitzpatrick

Greetings! This is an update to my posted question:

?About two months ago, while trying to backup my Windows XP Home
Compaq Computer using 1Safe, I got the message:
"A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent

Invalid_Kernel_Handle

I have the OnStream's 30GB Parallel Port Drive. Previously tape
backups went without a hitch for about four months.

I completely uninstalled 1Safe, PFSVIEW, and the OnStream Drivers, and
shut down the computer. I attached the OnStream 30GB Parallel Port
Drive to the parallel port, turned the OnStream tape drive on, and
booted up the computer.

Upon bootup, the computer found no new hardware. ?

Just yesterday, I tried the following Procedure (generated in a moment
of blinding illumination):

Procedure for Getting Onstream Tape Drive to Work on my Compaq Computer

(Starting conditions: Win XP Pro has Win XP Service Pack 2. All
Onstream, 1Safe Program, and drivers were previously uninstalled)

1. Uncheck "Process System.ini, Win.ini" in MSCONFIG

2. Deselect all startup items.

3. Select Start - Control Panel - Hardware Tab - Device Manager

4. Right Click SCM PPort ATAPI Adapter (Yellow "!" on it!!), and click
uninstall (In other words to completely uninstall Onstream and its
drivers, one also MUST uninstall SCM PPort ATAPI Adapter.)

5. Exit Device Manager

6. Shut Down and Power Down Computer

7. Connect Onstream Tape Drive.

8. Turn Onstream Tape Drive power on

9. Power up computer

10. Message: "Welcome to Found New Hardware Wizard." Select "No, not
this time", Click Next

11. "This wizard installs software for SCM PPort ATAPI Adapter"

12. Select "Install from a list or specific location". Click Next.

13. Select "Search for the best driver in these locations" and
"Include this location in search"

14. Location (on my computer) is: C:\Documents and
Settings\user\Desktop\DP30. Click Next.

15. Message: ?Please wait while the wizard installs the software.?
Message: "The wizard has installed the software for:

SCM PPort ATAPI Adapter." Click Finish.

16. Found New Hardware: Onstream DP30, and "Welcome to the Found New
Hardware Wizard."

17. IMPORTANT: Click cancel to abort the Wizard for the DP-30 Device.

18. Double click Echo_3-2-99.exe (in my DP30 Folder) to begin
installing Echo Software. WinZip Self Extractor: "OnStream Echo Data
Mgmt System". Click "Setup"

19. Follow OnStream Echo Instrsuctions on screen. IMPORTANT: when
INFORMATION SCREEN appears, Insert a tape into the tape drive!! and
click ?Next?.

20. After installation, click "No, I will restart my computer later.?

21. (I now ran Drive Image to create an image of C.)

22. Upon Bootup, I got the following message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start
successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused
this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or
was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose
Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings
that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a
power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if
you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows
Normally.

   Safe Mode
   Safe Mode with Networking
   Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
   Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice."

23. I selected to start up in Safe Mode and again got the "We
apologize for the inconvenience . . ." Message.

23A. I then selected to start up With Bootlogging
Nbtlog.txt reports as follows:
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Version 5.1 (Build 2600)
 5 2 2004 19:57:29.500
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
Loaded driver ACPI.sys
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\WMILIB.SYS
Loaded driver pci.sys
Loaded driver isapnp.sys
Loaded driver intelide.sys
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\PCIIDEX.SYS
Loaded driver MountMgr.sys
Loaded driver ftdisk.sys
Loaded driver PartMgr.sys
Loaded driver VolSnap.sys
Loaded driver atapi.sys
Loaded driver disk.sys
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
Loaded driver sr.sys
Loaded driver KSecDD.sys
Loaded driver Ntfs.sys
Loaded driver NDIS.sys
Loaded driver Mup.sys
Loaded driver agp440.sys
A whole bunch of drivers were reported as not loaded, so most likely
one of the above drivers is the culprit.

24. I then selected to start up in Safe Mode Command Prompt only and
again got the "We apologize for the inconvenience..." Message

25. I then selected "Start Windows Normally" and pressed the F8 Key
which brought up the Windows Advanced Options Menu. I selected the
"Debugging Mode" option. Again I got the again got the "We apologize
for the inconvenience . . ." Message.

26. I then selected to start Windows Normally and pressed the F8 Key
which brought up the Windows Advanced Options Menu. I selected the
"Start Windows Normally" option. A message in white on a blue
background saying "A problem has been detected ..." flashed on the
screen but was gone so quickly I could not read it. Is there anyway to
freeze the screen so that I can read it? The computer then rebooted
itself, and again I got the again got the "We apologize for the
inconvenience . . ." Message.

27. Finally I gave up and selected "Last Known Good Configuration"
which brought me to the Desktop. On the desktop is a small message
window stating: ?The Echo Driver could not be opened. Echo is not
installed correctly. OK?

Before I try various other things and (possibly) mess up my computer,
what is the best way for me to proceed (1Safe only has email Tech
Support and have not answered my emails; OnStream is out of business)?

Sincerely,

Michael Fitzpatrick

Hi,

You certainly seem to have gone through a lot of trouble to try and
get that tape working.

Could you please let me know why you are trying to use the tape? Are
you trying to restore data from it, or transfer data from one computer
to another? I'm asking, because there might be a simpler solution to
your problem that does not involve spending hours trying to get that
tape to work.

Thanks.

Greetings! I'm sorry I didn't get back here sooner. I was very busy
completing and filing income taxes. Generally speaking, I use the
OnStream Tape Drive for backup purposes. Currently it performs backups
just fine on my IBM NetVista Computer running under Windows XP Pro. It
was only by extensive trial and error (and probably some luck) that I
finally got 1Safe installed on my Compaq computer running Windows XP
Home and then working with the OnStream Tape Drive to do backups. But
now to do backups I have to disable all the startup items, System.ini,
Win.ini, and all the System Services but the three essential ones to
do so. Even after all this, whenever I change the tape in the drive,
the computer crashes and reboots by itself. Upon return to the
DeskTop, I can then backup to the new tape now in the tape drive. At
this time, I feel it would take countless hours of time for anyone to
do the research and/or trial and error to determine which System
service(s) is/are causing this problem, and to discover the cause of
the faulting problem when the tape is changed in the OnStream tape
drive. If there are any former OnStream engineers out there who have
successfully dealt with these problems in the past, please let me
know.

Sincerely,

Michael Fitzpatrick

1Vision.com support can help you with this problem. There is a pdf
you can read to perhaps fix the problem.
My advice to fix it quickly is to:
1. uninstall 1Safe but don't delete the catalog
2. you will need 4 files epatap2k.inf epatap2k.sys pfstape.inf pfstape.sys
put these files in some directory. you will probably find them by
scanning your working system for them. I wouldn't use them from your
broken system because they may be corrupted.
3. with the DP-30 turned off, delete the Onstream DP-30 from device manager.
4. turn on the DP-30 and then point the install to the files you saved above.
5. XP will report an error installing the device
6. reinstall 1Safe and reboot.
it should work then.
