There are many cities in Europe with more than one cathedral.

Because of multiple jurisdictions a city may have a Latin-rite Roman
Catholic cathedral, an Eastern Orthodox cathedral, An Eastern-rite
Roman catholic cathedral, an Anglican cathedral and a Lutheran
cathedral. So a single cathedral city could be counted more than
once.

Some eastern European cities may be Orthodox only. Some western
European cities are Roman Catholic or Anglican only. And some are
still in dispute, mainly in the Ukraine and Russia where many Eastern
Orthodox cathedrals were forcibly placed under Eastern-rite Roman
Catholic jurisdiction and now the Ukranian and Russian Orthodox are
trying to get their property back. What may be considered a
"cathedral city" by one jurisdiction is denied as being a "cathedral
city" by another.

Do you have a denominational preference? Some cathedrals, especially
Eastern Orthodox, may have no city affiliation at all but are
associated with rural monastic establishments. Would you classify
these as "cathedral cities?"

It could be quite an involved question without you giving detailed
specifics, and you may want to check the pricing guidlines if you want
a detailed answer with a breakdown for all of them.

Also, I must presume by "cathedral" you are speaking of a church which
is the seat of a bishop and not just a 'large building.'

The question is not about the number of Cathedrals, just the number of
Cathedral Cities. I must stress that it is only Cities and only
Cathedral Cities in Europe.

Hello again

We still have a complex question here. What authority would you
accept for an answer?

For example, it we used Roman Catholic cathedral cities, then we could
simply take the number of RC diocese in Europe and the number of
cathedral cities would be the same. Every diocese has a "cathedral"
church which is the seat of its bishop, whether a large structure or
just a small chapel. Such a list of diocese and the final number
would not include those cities where only Anglican, Eastern Orthodox
or Lutheran cathedrals were found.

The answer to your question would involve determining the number of
diocese in each and every jurisdiction that has an episcopacy,
determining which of those cities has multiple jurisdictions and
multiple cathedrals, subtracting or adding those cities during a cross
reference, etc, etc. - - - - and then, trying to determine what your
accepted definition of a "city" would be. What the 'church' may
define as a "cathedral city" may in reality be only a small village by
secular standards.

To be a "city" by your standards, does it have to have a minimum
population of 10,000 - 25,000 - 100,000? Or could it simply have
"city" as part of the name? We can't guess at what your definitions of
a city are.

Travel guides would be of no help since many of them list as
"cathedrals" structures which may have been cathedrals in the past but
which are no longer the seat of a bishop. Some list large churches as
"cathedrals" which have never been the seat of a bishop. And some
protestant denominations which have never had bishops at all, still
use the word "cathedral" to describe a structure or even as part of
the name of large churches.

You need to fine tune and define exactly what you want from us.
Depending on your final definitions as to what constitutes a "city"
and what constitutes a "cathedral," the number of "cathedral cities"
could range from a few dozen to several hundred.

Sorry, I posted my clarification in the wrong place, so here it is again.
It doesn't matter how many cathedrals there are in each city, or of
what denomination, just as long as there is at least one. The query
about city doesn't relate to the population number, just the name
city. So as long as it is a city, has at least one cathedral and is
situated in Europe, that is all I need to know. I hope that this
clarifies what I am in fact looking for.
Answer
There is no answer at this time.

There is no one standard international definition for 'city' and the
term 'cathedral city' is even more subjective.

For a list of cities in the UK (including those with cathedrals) visit

For a list of cathedrals worldwide (including those not in cities)

In the UK a City is defined by the fact that it has a Cathedral. ie
no Cathedral it is NOT a City!
