I have been trying to find this information for a few years now. Web,
friends and listening to oldies radio. There is a tune, somewhat of a
tearjerker, that may be from the middle 70's to the early 90's though
I have thought the late 70's to early 80's might be closest. I had
heard it many times but never listened until one day in the '96 to '98
range. Okay, here is the only line I can remember "Ricky, I never had
to die before" That line is preceded by other things the female
singer mentions that she also never had to do before. The name Ricky might
have been spelled differently and in fact (though I doubt it) might
have sounded like Ricky, but actually been Mickey or Dickey ?? This
is not the most important thing a person would ever need to know but
it has been on my mind for ten or so years and I'd really like to put
it to rest. It will really be great if this works!! Thanks in advance.

Hello.

I believe that the song was "Rocky" (written by Jay Stevens). The most
popular version was recorded by Austin Roberts in 1975.

'she said, "Rocky I've never had to die before, don't know if I can do it..."
Now it's back to two again'

Complete lyrics at Lyricsbox.com:
http://www.lyricsbox.com/austin-roberts-lyrics-rocky-kthxm9s.html

There's a clip of the song as track #3 on "Please Don't Take The Girl:
Tragic Love Songs - Various Artists"
http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=1289028

Several other performers recorded versions of "Rocky," including
Dickey Lee, Svenne & Lotta, and Orion. According to the All Music
Guide:
http://www.allmusic.com

Thus, if the Austin Roberts recording isn't the one that you heard, a
recording by another artist may be possible.

search strategy:
"never had to die before"
rocky "austin roberts" "never had to die before"

I hope "Rocky" is the song that you had in mind. If not, please let me
know via the "request clarification" feature. Thanks.

Exactly! Thanks much. I've just got it and that is the version I was looking for.
