Hi r2,
Thank you for a very interesting question.
Apparently there are valedictorians and salutatorians for Junior High
Schools too, and use the same name. Children can be the 8th Grade
Valedictorian and the 8th Grade Salutatorian.
The following are excerpts taken from various, mostly school, websites
to verify this:
"Congratulations to Candice Griffith and Stephen Mallue, who have
earned the distinction of valedictorian and salutatorian of the eighth
grade Class of 2004. These awards are determined strictly by a
mathematical averaging system that includes report card grades from
6th Grade, 7th Grade, and the first three quarters of 8th Grade.
Candice and Stephen led a highly competitive academic class with grade
point averages of 3.98 and 3.94 respectively. Three other students
earned a three year grade point average over 3.7.

learn English to the point that she passed the 8th grade Writing
Proficiency Test on the first try (she was one of only five 8th
graders to do this), but she also had the highest class GPA in both
7th and 8th grade, eventually graduating as 8th grade
Valedictorian..."

Winner of $25 - Congratulations!
"At the beginning of the school year, one sixth grader was reflecting
on his chance at being the 8th grade valedictorian. He said that his
dad was valedictorian, his mom was valedictorian, and his sister was
also valedictorian. He paused, leaned back in his chair and said,
?Looks like the end of an era!?"
