I am looking for a web site that offers the use of software (eg: Word,
Excel, Powerpoint). Rather than a virtual office, which connects
people as teams or groups, I need software that would be available on
an 'as needed' basis.
Do you know of any such sites?

I would recommend OpenOffice at www.openoffice.org, their software
suite has a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, and a
slideshow program.

Best of all, these software applications are open-source so they are free.
I would recommend ordering a CD from them unless you have high-speed
internet connection because the download is approx. 50-60 megabytes
and would take hours to download on a dial-up connection.

Good Luck!!!

Hi,

I know exactly what you're looking for sis01. You're looking for a
"pay as you go" website that offers you a spreadsheet, a word
processor, etc so you don't have to download and install shrink
wrapped software on your PC.

Although, there were many such offerings available in the early 2000s,
unfortunately none of them exist today. Prominent among those
"rich-thin-clients" were:

An entire windows-like operating system complete with all the "bells
and whistles" of Windows, hosted on a server and accessible from any
IE browser any where.
http://www.mywebos.com

A spreadsheet, word processor and email manager, all accessible in
minutes from any IE.
http://www.hyperoffice.com

A powerful spreadsheet application that you could load and use
directly from any browser.
http://www.blox.com

Since such applications are no longer available, I'd go with
banjobarry-ga's advice. The solution most suitable for your
requirements appears to be OpenOffice
http://www.openoffice.org

Thanks and regards,

Hi?

In my endless search for things new and interesting on the web, I came
across Goffice.com, a site which has a word processor, though no
spreadsheet or powerpoint. According to the site there are plans to
add desktop publishing and presentation mode, though these were not
yet functioning when I tried. It gives you document storage,
letterhead backgrounds and some canned forms to use. It also looks
like the folks running it have more stuff in the pipeline.
Good luck
