Hello Hank149,

The disorder you?re referring to is Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

?In Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSbP), a caregiver feigns or induces
an illness in another person, usually her or his child, to gain
attention and sympathy as the "worried" mother or father. Munchausen
by proxy is a form of child abuse first identified by Sir Roy Meadow,
former professor of Paediatrics at the University of Leeds, England.?

Below you will brief excerpts to articles about Munchausen Syndrome by
Proxy; however I highly recommend that you read each one in its
entirety.

The term "Munchausen syndrome by proxy" (MSBP) was coined around
twenty years ago, and hundreds of reports have appeared since then. In
most cases, a mother either claims that her child is sick, or she goes
even further to actually make the child sick. This "devoted" parent
then continually presents the child for medical treatment, all the
while denying any knowledge of the origin of the problem--namely,
herself. As a result, MSBP victims may undergo extraordinary numbers
of lab tests, medication trials, and even surgical procedures that
aren't really needed.

Munchausen by proxy syndrome (MBPS) is one of the most harmful forms
of child abuse. It is also perplexing. MBPS involves an apparent
deeply caring mother who repeatedly fabricates symptoms or provokes
actual illnesses in her helpless infant or child

?MUNCHAUSEN BY PROXY (MBP) (also called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy,
Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome, and Factitious Disorder by Proxy) is a
label for a pattern of behavior in which caretakers deliberately
exaggerate and/or fabricate and/or induce physical and/or
psychological-behavioral-mental health problems in others.

This pattern of behavior constitutes a separate kind of maltreatment
(abuse/neglect) that manifests as physical abuse, sexual abuse,
emotional abuse, neglect, or a combination. The primary purpose of
this behavior is to gain some form of internal gratification, such as
attention, for the perpetrator.?

?What Is MSP?"

?The term "Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy" (MSBP) was coined in a 1976
report describing four children who were so severely abused they were
dwarfed. In 1977, Roy Meadow described a somewhat less extreme form
of child abuse in which mothers deliberately induced or falsely
reported illnesses in their children. He also referred to this
behavior as MSBP.

Over the years, alternate terms, such as "Polle's syndrome" and
"Meadow's syndrome," have been suggested; however, these terms never
gained popularity.?

Here is a section on Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy from the Merck Manual:

?Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a bizarre variant in which usually a
child is used as a surrogate patient. The parent falsifies history and
may injure the child with drugs or add blood or bacterial contaminants
to urine specimens to simulate disease. The parent seeks medical care
for the child and always appears to be deeply concerned and
protective. The child is often seriously ill, requires frequent
hospitalization, and may die.

All the above must be considered in the light of recent discrediting
of some of the supposed cases of MSBP by British appeal courts. That
it is a real syndrome is highly probable, but it remains
controversial, and may well be much less common than some of the
"experts" have suggested.
