Question ID: 413481
A Belmarc Advisor Profile shows that I need to reinstall eight(8)
updates for my Microsoft Windows 98 System. They are Win98.SP1:
UPD168115 and UPD238453; Win98: UPD245729; UPD256015; UPD259728;
UPD273991; UPD314147; UPDQ823559.
I have the original installation disk but that won't necessarily
include the exact items. I an a novice at computer technology but can
follow clear instructions at the appropriate level.

As the comment below from dreamboat-ga correctly indicates, the best
place to look for supported updates to a Microsoft operating system is
the Windows Update website at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com .
When you navigate to that URL, an ActiveX module from Microsoft will
run to help you analyze your specific installation of Windows, and
will advise you what updates, if any, need to be downloaded and
installed.

However, if you run into any problems using the Windows Update
service, or wish to learn more about the updates before installing
them, you can also read the specific advisories released by Microsoft
by looking up each of those update numbers at the
http://support.microsoft.com website. Here are the direct links to
each of the relevant updates identified by Belarc Advisor:

Q168115: Malicious User with Physical Access to a Computer Can Acquire
Cached Domain Password
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;168115
- a direct link to the downloadable patch is provided in this article

Q238453: Data in Route Pointer Field Can Bypass Source Routing Disable
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;238453
- this is not a required update for all Win98 installations, so if
Windows Update does not say that you need it, don't worry about it

Q245729: Windows 95 and Windows 98 File Access URL Update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;245729
- a direct link to the downloadable patch is provided in this article

Q256015: Fatal Exception 0E with Multiple MS-DOS Device Names in Path
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256015
- a direct link to the downloadable patch is provided in this article

Q259728: Windows Hangs with Fragmented IP Datagrams
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;259728
- this article links you to:
  http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/wucritical/q259728/default.asp
in order to obtain the update as part of a larger security update

Q273991: Patch Available for "Share Level Password" Vulnerability
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273991
- following the cryptic links in this article eventually leads you to
the downloadable patch at:
  http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q273727/default.asp

Q314147: An Unchecked Buffer in the SNMP Service May Allow Code to Run
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314147
- a direct link to the downloadable patch is provided in this article

Q823559: Buffer overrun in the HTML converter could allow code execution
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823559
- a direct link to the downloadable patch is provided in this article

You may need to have your original installation disks handy during the
installation of these patches, if your installation does not already
include all of the necessary features involved in the patch. Usually,
these types of patches can be applied seamlessly with minimal user
interaction when you use the Windows Update service, so I wholly
recommend giving that website (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ) a
visit before using the direct links that I have provided above. If you
do need to download the patches manually using the links I have
provided, download them to a location where you can easily find them
again, as you will need to run each one after you have downloaded them
in order to install them.

Please let me know if you run into any problems applying these
patches, by using the "Request Clarification" button above.

I hope that this helps,

I rate this answer five stars even though I am not skilled to put it
to the test, to obtain the desired results. The Researcher writes very
clearly. I appreciate the thoroughness and time given to my question.
I do not tip; I haven't income to allow it. I do hope the $40 is
acceptable with the Reasearcher. Thank you,aht-ga. I am consulting a
technician to determine which of these updates are necessary and to
install only those, as aht-ga advises. As I better learn how price my
question I should be able to arrive at figure that will cover both the
answer and a tip. Thanks.

Those updates aren't on the original CD, at least not to my knowledge.
They should be found here, tho: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
