I can't find an online version of the complete NFL rules, but you can
purchase them at amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1572435135/102-4519710-6830504?v=glance

I have also found multiple references to a snap albeit from somewhat
questionable references, that state that the snap should be:

"A quick, continuous, backwards movement of the ball from its position
on the ground in which the ball immediately leaves the hands of the
snapper and touches a backfield player or the ground before it touches
an offensive team lineman."

So to answer your question, it appears based on the available sites,
that it is not legal in the NFL, but I could not find formal citation
of the rules..

http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules, it doesn't say that it's illegal
anywhere that I can see. But if it's technically legal, it seems
rather impossible.

There are a couple of rules to be aware of:
1. The guard can not have any movement at all prior to the snap.
Otherwise it would result in a false start penalty.
2. The guard must also be lined up at the line of scrimmage, as
stated by the rules, which makes it even harder to receive a snap.
3. I would guess that a guard does not have to report in as an
eligable receiver and that a snap would be considered a backwards or
lateral pass rather than a forward pass.
