Our seven year old son has had ulcerative colitis since he was an
infant (originally diagnosed as enosophilic (sp?) colitis. He has had
3 long stretches (6 weeks to 1 year) of solid stools in that time.
They followed times after he had a high fever (usually with a cold or
flu. Do you know of any information (research, articles, etc.)
relating to colitis going into remission after fevers?

Hi,

You are probably aware of this already, but flus and fevers usually
cause a flare up in patients who are in treatment and not a remission.
Was your son treated with any medications during the time that he had
the fever? There could be a link between the action of the drugs he
was given for the illness causing the fever and the reduction of his
symptoms. Do you remember or can you look up the treatments he
received? If so, I'd look for the connection there and not with the
fever.

Good luck!

Our son was on no medication at those times (or for most of his life).
Early (around when he turnes 3) on he was prescribed Prednizone with
no positive results. We have tried different homeopathic remidies with
some possible results. Also there seemed to be some correlation
between an enrgy healer we tried and improved stools, but nothing
definative. The following is what has spured this inquiry. He usually
has loose watery stools 4-6 times/ day. At some time comes down with
what appears to be a cold or flu. During the cold he gets a fever
(between 102 and 105). After the fever goes away and he begins having
solid stools. This has occured 3 times and the solid stools have
lasted between 6 weeks an 1 year in the time we have been tracking
this. There was one other time of prolonged solid stools (8 weeks) and
the was right after a colonoscopy where his intestines were cleaned
out before the scope. My conjecture is that the high fever (or scope)
eliminated bacteria or other pests in the intestine which were causing
the colitis. However, I have seen no information supporting this and
am looking for any information that mentions stools improving
significantly in colitis patients after they have had a fever and what
conjectures/information was drawn from that.

Have you looked into celiac disease? Gluten can cause severe diarrhea
and constipation. Since it is an autoimmune disease, it can also cause
fever.
