Hello! I'm looking for any research articles that pertain to foot disorders leading to lower back pain/ disorders. To make a long story short, I have a patient who had a stress fracture in his left foot. He was placed into a cast for a period of 6 months, he was only able to "hobble around". After the cast was removed, he continued to limp and he now uses a cane. He is now complaining of lower back pain with sciatica. MRI results showed L4-5 and L5-S1 disc herniations. I'm trying to prove in a court that the altered biomechanics of his walking and activities of daily living placed enough stress in his back to cause injury. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Hi Although I am not mediacally trained in any way, I would send him to an osteopath or chiropractor. Pain in one area of the body can easily be caused by a problem in a completely different, and seemingly totally unrelated area of the body. An osteopath or chiropractor would be able to check all that out and realign and balance whatever is off balance. Hobbling around for a long time could certainly place stress on the back. Personally, if I allow the heel of my right shoe to wear down too much, I get lower back pain which disappears when I get new shoes. Hope that helps Jane |
