What social issues in United States history have been legislated before a popular majority has supported it? Example: If same sex marriage was legalized in the United States in 2004, it would not have a majority of support within the population. (I believe 60% of the population oppose same-sex marriages). I am looking for 5 high profile issues and supporting polling data on the level of Women?s Voting Rights, Integrated Schools, etc. |

In 1968, when the ban on Interracial marriage was struck down by the Supreme Court, 23 states still had the ban on the books. |
