Question ID: 413934
I would like to buy and create a wireless audio and video system with
satellite feeds from a satellite receiver for video input, digital
audio feeds from Itunes on a computer media player, and Internet feeds
through an Internet service provider, but all of these sources would
have to communicate wirelessly to the output devices. Plasma or LED
HD monitors would be the video output devices. Wireless speakers
would be the audio output devices. Is this possible? What
communication software or wireless devices will be needed to be added
to make this a workable solution?

Hello -

Thank you for your question.

Is this for a residential application, such as a house or apartment?
If so, what size? Also, when you say "Internet feeds" -- what would
you be referring to here? Do you want a keyboard/mouse/screen type
setup in every room of the house, with one central, wireless "media
server" computer in one room?

Thanks,

It is a residential application - 4 floors. Satellite feed comes into
floor #2. Entertainment room is on floor #3. It has a large plazma TV
Monitor no built in tuner or speakers, a receiver, DVD Player, and two
satelite receivers (first HD Sat Receiver is for main picture and
second receiver supports PIP in the Plazma). Master bedromm on floor
#2 has a high definition LED with built in tuner and speakers there.
There is a satellite receiver on the second floor. Master bathroom on
floor #2 has LED TV with built in tuner and speakers. First floor
kitchen has a high definition satelite receiver, high definition LED
TV with built in speakers tuner and PC compatible access port, a
planned personal computer with internet conection and a computer media
center will be located on the first floor that will house digital
music and digital pictures.

Initially we were going to wire the whole house for speakers and
video, but the cost and mess would be significant, so we scaled back
our wish list. Then I read about Apples Airport Express and Creative
Labs Sound Blaster Wireless Music. Those sound like partial solutions
in that you can broadcast from a media player to a receiver hooked up
to a bunch of speakers, but that does not deal with video and not
really with truly portable speakers.

The ideal scenario would be able to broadcast video from any satelite
receiver in the house or from the the main receiver conected to the
DVD player to any of the four HD TV monitors in the house and to be
able to broadcast music from the digital media center on the first
floor to portable speakers scattered around the house.

From an audio perspective all speakers would have to support stereo
except in the 3rd floor entertainment room where component audio is
neccessary with 5 speakers plus a woffer.

Lastly the house will have a broad band internet conection through the
local telephone company and this would have to wirelessly talk to the
PC and Monitor on the first floor.

Is such distributed wireless portability a reality or a pipe dream?
Do the devices work? Are they ecconomical? What would be required?

Thanks for the clarification.

Can you tell me what kind of budget you'd be willing to work with for
this kind of project?

As of right now, there technologically does not exist a pragmatic way
to transmit component HDTV video wirelessly. You CAN transmit video,
but it would of "basic"/low quality. I've spoken to companies that
specialize in such things to confirm this.

I believe I have found a solution for the audio portion of things;
however, again the quality might not be "perfect".

You ask about budget. If you are talking about wireless devices like
Apple Airport Express for Audio transmission they are about $125USD
per device that you try to conect. I assume that some sort of Comand
Center will be required $1000+ to do so, however for true portability
the speakers would have to be independent with their own receivers
built in. Each of those won't be cheap. Next when talking about
video as you point out there may not be a "pragmatic way
to transmit component HDTV video wirelessly". Now, I know that Sony
has come out with a new wireless TV that has a wireless hub that sits
on the receiver end and transmits to the TV set, but is that all that
there is and what is the quality? I heard that this device was $2000+
per unit.

Perhaps a more practical solution is to "wire" the entertainment room
with HDTV and to transmit signals to the rest of the building in
"Normal" signal resolution. Is that possible, what are the
alternatives?

Beaming a signal like this through four floors is going to be a real
challenge. Here's an example of a product that claims to do this kind
of thing on some level:

However, this operates at 2.4 GHz, and if you have other devices on
this band (like a cordless phone), you can probably expect
interference, not to mention potential issues penetrating the
ceilings/floors.

Something like the Sharp Wireless TV is "prone to interference" as
well, according to CNET, and must be situated close to the base
station:

Info on the sony can be found here:

I think, practically speaking, the only way for you to achieve what
you're looking to do is to abandon the wireless option. I think the
amount of money you'd spend on that could be better spent on a wired
solution, perhaps running CAT-5 network cable around the house into
the different rooms. There are solutions which can do A/V over CAT5.
I can't imagine that being as expensive as these other offerings, and
it would allow you to do exactly what you're looking to do with no
skimping on quality.

Let me know if you'd like me to present you with information on that option.

I too have seen the devices you mention. All come short of my needs.
Wireing is not the answer and I think there are many products yet to
come. I guess I will just have to wait though for them to become a
reality

Yes, I believe at some point it will be a reality. Please stop by again!
