I need help configuring file sharing on a Windows XP network. I'm looking for specific instructions to address the following situation: I have a small business with four computer users and five computers: - three Windows XP Professional machines (1/employee) - one Mac OS X powerbook (1 employee) - one Windoxs XP Home Edition machine (used as a storage box to save corporate files) All of the machines are currently networked (via a Linksys wireless access point) and file sharing is enabled in such a way that all of the users can read and write files to the Windows XP Home Edition machine which is being used as a storage box. Going forward, I would like to make some of the files on the storage box available to only a sub-set of my team (e.g., sensitive files that only myself and my business partner should be able to access). I believe there is a way to use NTFS encryption to handle this situation, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Thank you for your help. |

Create individual users account for each user on the windows xp home machine. Make sure that each user has the same username/password on their personal machine and also on the windows xp home computer. Now set the NTFS permissions to read/write and execute for each user for only that folder. Remove all other permissions, Leave full control to system Share the folder using windows sharing.. This shoudl allow users from the windows xp boxes to access the windows xp home computer without enterign their username, since windows will select the current logged on user as the default username/password to connect to the remote computer |

First, open up the 'computer managment' console from the 'administrative tools' folder (startmenu or control panel). From there you can configure the users and groups efficently. You will have to set up the same username and passwords on all computers (the 1 user and server). I beleive you only need to setup the groups and permissions only on the server system. Then you need to disable simple file sharing on your drive. Goto "Folder Options" in your control panel, then click the "view" tab. Scroll all the way to the bottom and remove/make sure the box is not checked. Click ok. Now when you right click a folder and goto properties (or just 'sharing and security), it will give you an advanced permissions panel. Kinda like CHMOD. Then you can click Advanced for in-depth configuration. |
