I am looking for a book that I read in the 90's or late 80's. The
book was written by a former IRS auditor/agent/examiner and was a
collection of stories about his various audits. This was not a
technical book about auditing or taxes but a book abot the life of an
IRS auditor so to speak.

I do not remember the name of the book or the author but having
searched extensively I know there are no such similar books so if you
find one it is more than likely the book I am looking for.

Could this be your book?

That's not the book as it looks like it was published in 2005. The
book I am looking for is between 1980-1995. You have the right
content though.

Could it be "In This Corner, The IRS" (1981) by JR Price?

"Dell, 1981, Paperback...
A former IRS special agent gives you the inside story."

Sound familiar?

Presti book I blindly bought from Amazon and it is not it.

The Price book sounds like a technical book about auditing not one
with stories so that is not it.

The Crumbley book may be it so I will compensate you and give it a shot.

I am delighted to have been able to help!

For the record, my guess was "The Ultimate Rip-Off: A Taxing Tale."

"THE ULTIMATE RIP-OFF, 4th edition
by D. Larry Crumbley (aka Iris Weil Collett)2005
 ISBN: 0-913878-59-6

Jeff Burke, a Special Agent for the IRS, goes beyond the law to find
several taxpayers who are evading taxes and uncovers a major plot by
the IRS commissioner and a rare coin enterprise to rip off millions of
dollars in income tax revenues to finance a secret project. Along the
way, public finance concepts, political controversies, contemporary
individual and corporate tax planning, tax fraud and avoidance, and
the real life of IRS employees are elucidated in a way both students
and instructors will find gripping and informative."

Thomas Horton & Daughters

I am not surprised that my colleagues discovered several alternatives
for you. Having had a few relatively minor run-ins with the Internal
Revenue Service (or is it "Infernal"?), I can well imagine the
literary possibilities of this line of work. Surely this book would be
categorized as "Horror." ;-)

Very best regards,

Please note that the book described in the link I posted was
originally published in 1985. The 2005 date is for the fourth edition.
