Looking for quality control expert with expertise in ISO 9000,
preferably with a PHD or Masters degree, or at least 5 years of
genuine consulting and based in California. A university professor or
researcher would be best.

We need to use this person's credibility to verify our quality control
system, therefore person's background and credibility are important.

marco70-ga,

It's a bit hard to pinpoint exactly the right consultant for you
without a full description of the type of business you're in, and the
QC certification situation you're facing.

However, I've identified more than 30 ISO 9000 consulting groups in
California some of whom might be able to meet your needs.

The listings look like this:

Caliso California ISO 9000 Consulting
125 Oyster Pond Road
Alameda, CA 94502
Ph. 925-777-1219 Fax 510-521-5926

Clydesdale International Management
Consulting
570 El Camino Real, No. 150
Redwood City, CA 94063
Ph. 800-360-4476 Fax 650-367-7383

Collier & Associates
26 Flintstone
Aliso Viejo, CA 92656
Ph. 949-831-5639 Fax 949-831-5678

Competitive Edge
309 Calle Neblina
San Clemente, CA 92672
Ph. 949-498-0122 Fax 949-498-0122

E&Q Consultancy

Upland, CA 91786
Ph. 909-949-9043 Fax 909-949-4424

Would the full list of ISO 9000 consultants meet your needs? If not,
perhaps you can provide a more detailed description of the type of
consultant you're after.

Thanks.

Thank you for the initial list of possible consultants. After
reviewing their credentials, I am convinced that we need more of an
academic type; someone whose credentials are impressive and whose
opinion would be considered unbiased. We pack fruit and operate under
a quality assurance system patterned after the International Standards
Organization?s ISO-9000 standards and process control principles and
analysis techniques. Our system is approved by the government (USDA,
www.ams.usda.gov/fv/fpbpiq.html). Though we were initially approved
several years ago and have been operating successfully, they've
suddenly decided that even though our quality control is excellent,
they say our process is no longer compatible with the ISO-9000-style
process control principles they require.

So, we want a third-party to review our system and tell us (and the
government) whether it is compatible with ISO-9000 process control
principles, and if not, what we need to do to make it compatible. I
don't think the consultant necessarily needs experience in our
industry, rather, he or she needs to be an expert at ISO-9000 process
control principles.

Does that help? It would be ok if the consultant were in another
state. Perhaps at an engineering school like MIT? The government is
impressed by PhDs who work at a university.

Thanks for getting back to me.

It sounds like you're looking for someone like this:

=====
http://cherokee.agecon.clemson.edu/jgs-cv.htm

John G. Surak
Professor
Department of Applied Economics and Statistics
224 Barre Hall
Clemson University
Clemson , SC 29634

Dr. John Surak leads a teaching, research and public service program
that focuses on increasing agribusiness productivity. These efforts
focus on developing systems that assist food processors improve food
safety, and food quality in a global market place.

Author of:
Surak, J. G. 2001. The International organization for
standardization: ISO 9000 and relevant standards. In the Food Safety
Handbook, John Wiley and Sons, New York .
=====

If this is on the right track, I can probably provide about five more
names of academics with similar high-caliber credentials (though not
all of them in the food industry).

Would that meet your needs? If so, let me know if you have a
preference for a particular geographical area or university.

Yes, this does look like what I'm looking for but please keep in mind
that we're not necessarily looking for someone in Agriculture. It's
more important that they be an expert in ISO 9000 process controls
than an expert in Agriculture.

Thanks,

-Marco

Hello again Marco.

Thanks for working with me on this to clarify just what you need.

Here are some additional contacts to ISO 9000 and QC specialists in
academia who I trust will meet your criteria (I even included one in
California!).

Before rating this answer, please let me know if you need any
additional information about the folks listed here, or any additional
contacts. Just post a Request for Clarification, and I'll be happy to
