I want to find an Easter play that I directed about forty years ago in
Provo, Utah. This was an unusual Easter play in that it did not
include music of significance of any form i.e. no choruses or
orchestra. It solely involved the trial of the person who had been
hired to guard the tomb of Christ and ensure that no human being would
roll the stone in front of His tomb away to let Him escape. Obviously,
he had failed in this responibility because the body of Christ was not
there when the stone was rolled away the following day. I have been
unable the find this particular play. Would you please help me asap?

Does this sound familiar?

"In a courtroom supposedly shuttered for the Easter holidays, some
ghostly figures in modern dress saunter in and put on trial a gardener
for removing Christ's body from his tomb so that it would seem he had
come back to life. A host of biblical figures testify... after which
the judge tells the audience that it is the jury and must reach its
own verdict."

If that's your play, I'll be pleased to tell you more about it. If
not, we'll certainly keep looking for you.

If the description of the play I mentioned above does not sound like
the correct play, it would be very helpful if you could give us a few
more details. I have not been able to find any Easter play other than
the one described above which involves a trial related to the missing
body of Christ.

I believe you might have found the play. However, I don't recall there
being ghostly figures who saunter in and out during the trial. Rather
than a "gardener", the man being tried was posted to see that no one
would move the stone placed at the tomb thus permitting mortals to
remove the body of Christ. This "guard" not "gardener" must have
fallen asleep, etc. What would it cost to get a copy of the play asap?

Sincerely,

kds

If the play you're thinking of does not have a gardener or ghostly
figures, it probably isn't the play I was thinking of, which is "The
Vigil," by Ladislas Fodor, written in 1947.

Here's a list of the characters in "The Vigil":

A bit more about the play:

"The Vigil

Author: Ladislas Fodor

A compelling courtroom drama in which a gardener is accused of
grave-robbing, removing and hiding the body of Jesus of Nazareth
between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Both Prosecuting and Defending
Counsel call a parade of witnesses including Mary Magdalene, Pontius
Pilate, Joseph of Arimathea, Saul of Tarsus and Simon Peter. The play
succeeds in making a striking modern parallel with the events
described particularly when Pilate appears in the witness box to
discuss the problems of a colonial governor. The audience is the jury
and must make up its own mind at the end of the play."

I hope another Researcher will be able to find exactly the play you
want. If any additional details occur to you, please let us know. If
you decide that "The Vigil" is your play, I'll be glad to help you
find a place to buy a copy.
