why would ActivCard Gold not work after upgrading from Windows 2k to
XP? Receiving "USB NOT FOUND" or "SmartCard Service not started"
errors.  In services all services are started.

I've had the same problem. It can be fixed very easily. All you have
to do is delete/uninstall the USB-drivers so XP can detect them again.
Then you'll see your hardware is going to be detected.
