Are original works of art and literature the end products of a
neurotic reaction ? in effect a retreat from reality into a sublimated
or substituted fantasy world (as the tragically-minded Freud would
have it) ? or do they represent some sort of breakthrough of
consciousness ? a crossing over from ordinary, mundane existence into
a higher, hidden, more spiritually authentic ?Reality? (as the more
optimistic Jung argued)
