Running Win-XP Home Service Pack 2, Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express. From any program(s) I cannot "Send" to Outlook EXPRESS. Long,
long time ago Iloaded Microsoft Office and OUTLOOK (not Express),
didn't like OUTLOOK and removed it, (properly, I think). Now whenever
I click on anyone's "Send To eMail" I get OUTLOOK (not Express), Which
of course no longer exists. How do I get rid of this last remmant of
OUTLOOK and replace it with Outlook Express? |

Hi dickiedoo,
Perhaps this will help?
Set Outlook Express as default mail client - Start/Run and type in:
MSIMN.EXE /REG
Check your settings here: Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
Default for OE should read like this:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\Msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
Email Page - IE (right click) w/ Clickable Link (Line 60)

Hi Hummer.
Maybe we are onto something? Could I be running without MSIMN.EXE?
Start/Run/MSIMN.EXE ends up with "file not found." Search also says
"file not found"
In the registry the default for "mailto" is verbatum the command you
sent, including the \Msimn.exe
Thanks, so far, still need help

Hi dickiedoo,
It's ok for XP (Kellys Korner is an XP guru). It is the same thing
again on another XP website:
Outlook Express : can't make it default mail client
"you try to set Outlook Express in XP as your default mail client. It
resets saying "this is not the default mail client" every time you go
into the options menu. Solution: Click Start, Run and enter MSIMN.EXE
/REG Then if needed, go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs
and click the Reset Web Settings Button."
http://is-it-true.org/nt/xp/atips/atips17.shtml
Did you type the whole thing: "MSIMN.EXE /REG"?
Fingers crossed,

Hi Hummer,
Yep... Typed it exactly... Have learned a little more, to whatever value?
1) "RUN" MSIMN.EXE /REG comes up with an error saying "File Not Found"
2) "SEARCH" MEIMN.EXE comes up with "File Not Found"
3) AVAFIND (3rd party search prgm) Shows it in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express
4) "RUN" C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe /reg comes up with
- Windows cannot find`C:\Program`. Make sure...."
4) The REGISTRY command is
"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
NOTE: no space between "Program" and "Files"
Can't figure why "RUN" AND "SEARCH" can't find msimn... "SEARCH" can't
find regedit either.
{SEARCH for me sucks. It wont find much of anything. That's why I
subscribe to AVAFIND - However that's another problrm, I think}

Have you tried repairing IE? Read this:
"It may not be necessary to re-install OE. Many times, the following
information is a solid fix for many problems.
Try using Internet Explorer's repair option:
Go to:
1. Start>> Settings>> Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove programs.
2. Scroll down until you find Microsoft Internet Explorer.
3. Highlight it and click the Add/Remove button.
Note: This will not attempt to remove Internet Explorer.
4. From the resulting menu; select "Repair Internet Explorer".
If the above repair does not work:
1. Use the Find option on your Start menu to find the file
"msimn.exe" and make a note of the full pathname. You'll probably find
that it's something like "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".
If it isn't there, make a note of where it actually is, and alter it
in the details I've given you below.
2. Next, make sure OE isn't running, click Start>> Run>> and then
enter the following:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
Note: You need to make sure you put the quotes round the first part,
and make sure there's a space before the /reg.
This tells Outlook Express to reset its registry entries, which should
allow you to set OE as your default mail client in IE's Program
options."

Hi Hummer
Well I finally got msimn.exe to work; I guess. At least it dosen't
come up with "File Not Found" now. In fact if it did anything it
didn't tell me.
I was not putting the quotation marks as specified. Your "Try
repairing OE memo" included this line [Note: You need to make sure you
put the quotes round the first part,...]
Didn't do any good however. Been browsing around the site you
suggested and others to no avail.
I think WIN XP took that "Repair IE function" out. IE is not listed in
the "Add/Remove list and Help "Repair" brings up nothing. From the MS
OE site it seems like a major job to "Reinstall" IE with OE. I fear I
would lose more than I gain by following their suggested route for
"fixing" OE.
I have done all of the up-dates including SR3 and none of them have
done any fixing.
The problem that "Set OE to default mail..." is "grayed-out" in
OE/Tools/Options/General seems to be the problem. Apparently something
is missing from the Registry that the up-dates do not address. I wish
I knew what????

Hi Again
MAYBE...??? The following paragraph copied from the site you recmd
last points out a very interesting possibility...
Unfortunately, despite following the instructions in the immediately
preceding paragraph, when you close the Tools | Options | General
dialogue box and open it again, you may find that the options setting
OE as the default Mail client mysteriously are now disabled. The most
common culprit for this user frustration is the installation of
Outlook 97, either on a stand alone basis or as part of an Office 97
installation, after you installed Outlook Express. What happens is
that the installer for either Office 97 or Outlook 97 completely
deletes the reg entries for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Clients /
Mail / Outlook Express, i.e., the registry keys for Outlook Express |
Protocols, shell, etc., no longer exist in your System Registry.
Despite this annoying problem, here are a couple of things that you
can do to remedy your frustration.
I've recopied the interesting phrase...
completely deletes the reg entries for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software /
Clients / Mail / Outlook Express, i.e., the registry keys for Outlook
Express | Protocols, shell, etc., no longer exist in your System
Registry.
Looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Clients / Mail / Outlook
Express, indeed the values for Protocols, shell, etc., no longer exist
in my System Registry.
Is it possible to "Get" generic values for these missing values? Such
that I could plug them in?

Good morning.
Sorry, the Repair Option doesn't work with IE6 and XP. Try System File
Checker instead.
MS Support:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP:
"Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files
on your computer:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

Hi Hummer,
I think XP needs a little help...
Re SFF /SCANNOW - I recall running sfc /scannow many times in the past.
BUT now it won't recognize the CD. It says something about "Wrong
Version" Well duh! I upgraded to Service packs 1 & 2
Install ie.inf - Here in the midst of the install it asks for a file
that is not on the Original CD. Luckily I found it in
"Windows\ServicePackFiles\386. SFC does not give you the option to
browse nor does it identify which file it is checking.
BUT it did not correct the problem.
Is it possible to get the proper values for those missing in the
registry? I could plug them in manually if they could be found. To me
it seems the problem is in the registry??? I don't think the registry
is "an updateable file."
Below is a copy from one of the sites you sent me to....
What happens is that the installer for either Office 97 or Outlook 97
completely deletes the reg entries for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software /
Clients / Mail / Outlook Express, i.e., the registry keys for Outlook
Express |
Protocols, shell, etc., no longer exist in your System Registry.

Hi Hummer,
WOW that looked too good to be true and it was. It sure is what we
want but there is a flaw somewhere.
I tried to run it. Then Saved it and tried to run it from my hard disk.
My registry editor refuses to run it. It comes up with a dialog box
that says, "Cannot import c:\x: Error opening the file. There may be
disk of file system error.
I then opened it in NOTEPAD. It has 6
[HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLIENTS\MAIL\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\ ...] values
and 6 more OUTLOOK values - about a full page worth.
I checked my registry and NONE of them is there.
In the NOTEPAD read out the top line is "Windows Registry Ediror Version 5.00"
I wonder if that is what is kicking out thie file?
I wonder if this .reg file might be for an earlier version of Windows?
Yep THIS IS apparently what I am Missing. The registry values
I am just too afraid to assume to type it all in long hand, other than
making a typo, what with almost a page full of numbers, and some that
I don't know exactly how to put in, but if these numbers are not
meant for this computer I don't want to screw up my registry.

Dear Richard,
1) I have been remiss in not reminding you to back up your registry
before doing anything to it - that way, you'll always be able to
restore it to its previous state if needed.
Backing Up and Restoring the Windows XP Registry
http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_xp_registry.htm
2) I'm sure the reg file is for XP because that's what the Kellys
Korner website is for. "Registry Edits for Windows XP 'Tweaks and
Tips'".
The only other thing I can think of is for you to find a friend with
XP/OE and ask him to take a peek at his registry. I have neither so
I'm no help there.
I want to get this off to you now to be certain that you back up your
registry before making any changes. If I think of anything else, I'll
let you know.
