hi - trying to repair an old gateway 366c machine for an uncle and I
got in over my head. The machine was so loaded with virus & spyware
that I decided to reload win 98.  After the reload, I discovered that
the modem was a winmodem and I loaded the driver for it but there
seems to be some conflict on the COM1 port and the COM2 port that
winmodem decided to use. there are two other issues - there are two
PCI devices (comm and audio) that are listed as having a problem in
the system manager but I've got no clue as to what they are or why
there is an issue. I've opened the machine and outside of the modem -
nothing is installed in any of the PCI slots. Final issue - there
seems to be some type of onboard video that I need the driver for but
I can't determine how I'd find out what driver it is.  Right now it's
operating at the lowest resolution.  It appears that all of these
issues are driver related... Please help - I should have never
volunterred to take a look but he's a sweet old guy that was only
using the machine to check email and AOL...

I'd upgrade to windows XP which has all the drivers.

Ok first off if you ever decide to format a computer again, back up
all the drivers on the system before hand. Ok now that we seem to have
a situation. Ok well if you have the serial number you can go here
http://support.gateway.com/support/allsysteminfo.asp and find more
information out about your computer. Becuse i need the system specs to
be able to help you. I can more than likley find the drivers for
everything you need once i aquaire this information. If you can get me
the information i need then i will help get your computer working once
again.

Btw the mentioned computer would not be able to run windows xp. So
please don't suggest it if there is no way it will work. I would
really hate to see him back in here asking why xp won't run on that
old of a system.

The serial number is 001354426. I found the gateway support site but
the FAQ reference the System Restore disk - which I don't have.

Perhaps my email leads you to believe that I don't have any computer
knowledge, I do.. I know that a 366Mhz processor with 32Mb of memory
won't run XP.
