Dear Viola,

Did you mean theatre as in "acting" and similar professions
(playwriting, directing); or did you refer to the theoretical side? In
addition, what is your BA in, and what is your experience otherwise?

Hi--

I'm actually asking for a friend. I'm not sure what his BA is in,
though i imagine it's theater. He does a lot of work on the side
directing local theater as well. And, yes, he's interested in teaching
stage, acting, directing ect. He just wants to know what he needs in
order to begin pursuing positions in colleges. Hope this clears things
up!

Thanks!

Dear Viola,

Most colleges and universities would require a PhD in theatre as a
prerequisite for a universitty college or teacher. However, in fields
such as directing or actor's studios, the requirements are more
experience related, than educational (a person must have experience in
direction, or in actors' coaching).

In community colleges, a Masters' degree, and even in some cases a
B.A., just like your friend's could be enough. Community colleges
(naturally) pay less and have less prestige than universities, but it
is much easier to find a position there; and the position is based on
teaching, not on research (what might be your friend's current problem
in universities and colleges).

I must put all of this in reservation, though: the academic
work-market is today very competetive, and people who graduate with
PhD find themselves in many cases settling for community colleges and
other non-university jobs, since there is a shortage in jobs in arts,
humanities and social sciences today.
