Question ID: 416337
Trying to add an HP2710 as a printer for an IBMT23 laptop running windows XP pro.

After completing the install off the disk that came with the printer
(or from the download available at HPs website, same effect), after
getting past missing file errors for serscan.sys and sRGB.ICM, there
is lots of uninteresting HP digital photo management software living
on my comptuter, but no printer has been added.

trying to use wireless network.

After running install 5 or so times, finally got it to work on another
laptop after encountering the same errors, but I really dont have time
to run the install 5 times. Know of a better way?

Hi peter2710-ga,
I had a problem with an HP Wireless Printer once, also on a laptop.

Have you tried installing the printer with the ethernet cable plugged in?

Can you access the Printer's configuration page?

Do you know the IP address of this printer?

Also, does this digital photo management software startup each time
you run Windows XP Pro?

Thank you.

1) I have not run the install with an ethernet cable, but the install
DOES correctly identify the printer type and wireless SSID. the
install does run through correctly, with the driver errors mentioned,
but after it is done, there is nothing new in my "Printers" area.

2) I can easily identify the IP number of the printer using the logs
on my router, and from the printer itself

3) Yes, the digital photo management starts up ever time i run windows.

If the same laptop is plugged directly into the USB port, a known-good
USB port (use it for all sorts of things) I get "Unable to find
usbscan.sys on (Unknown)"

laptops name is not "Unknown"

Clearly, the HP device or software need something that I am missing. but what?

Hi peter2710-ga,
Sorry for the late reply.
If you know the IP address of your printer, try setting up a printer
with the TCP/IP connection option.
For the time being, select any HP Printer, I believe it's HP Deskjet 560.

I'm speaking from experience with the HP PSC 2510 model.

Please let me know if that helps.

Thank you.

1. Make sure you're not running windows xp with sp2(on SP2 you may
need to check with hp to see if the software compatible with it).
2. Try to manually add the printer using add printer and hp and ...
3. try to obtain the latest driver/software from http://www.hp.com

I purchased the HP 2710 a few days ago. I'm trying to load install
with a Toshiba laptop, Win Home Ed XP. I've spent wasted phone time
with the HP tech reps. (appeared not very competent), Toshiba Tech
support, and finally with Comp USA Tech . No luck with all. I'm
returning the printer on the advice from COMP USA. Computer is
recognizing IP address and HP 2700 but than will ask to load Win XP
Home ED disk. Install has been gone through a number of different
ways.
I did get the printer to install properly with a Compaq laptop, Win Prop ED. XP.

Here's how to solve this issue:

(1) Find driver.cab on your Windows XP install CD. It should be in the
\i386\ directory. If you have purchased a computer with Windows
software pre-installed, search your hard disk for this file. Computer
manufacturers often place this and other Windows install files in a
directory like c:\msoft so that it's easy to add more Windows
components later.

(2) Unzip this file to your desktop in a folder called DRIVER, using
an utility such as Winzip. It's large and will take a while.

(3) Start the installer for the HP PSC 2510 software again. Once it's
found your printer over the network and asks you for serscan.sys and
sRGB.ICM, navigate to the DRIVER folder you unzipped to your desktop.
The installer will continue.

I hope this helps.
