At present, the record is held by taste.co.uk, which was sold for £110,000:
"Domain name investors Name-Shop.net announced that the address
taste.co.uk has recently been sold to J Sainsbury plc for £ 110,000
(GBP), believed to be a record price for a .co.uk domain. Previously,
six- and seven-figure sums had only been reached by a small number of
.com addresses. Name-Shop director Angus Hanton said 'Even at that
price, it's a shrewd purchase by Sainsbury's. They will have
absolutely no trouble making their money back several times over with
the marketing potential of that address. It's a perfect example of a
true prime generic domain name, and it shows that .co.uk names are the
correct marketing tool for a primarily British-based company. The .com
market is much more saturated, and has become associated with
?pie-in-the-sky' start-up ventures, not solid established British
companies like Sainsbury's'.
Name-Shop technical advisor David Thurgate added 'We have 20,000 other
generic domain names, mostly .co.uk but some .coms too. Of course, not
all are as good as taste.co.uk, but their potential is enormous'. He
admitted 'even we didn't see the value of what we had to start with -
we sold egg.co.uk to the Prudential in May 1998 for £1,700! The domain
name market has come a long way since then."
