What is the maximum size disk which my BIOS will recognize and handle?
I am interested in having a disk with 5 partitions each being
about 2048 Mbytes and if possible one smaller partition. The said disk
should be recognizable by my BIOS, and that Symantec's Partition Magic
should be capable of installing various operating systems, such as
windows 95 and windows98 giving me the option to start either
operating system without having to open the computer and change disks.
I would also like to know - but I will consider this question answered
even without this - how do large disks work. If each sector is 512
bytes and there are 63 sectors per side and 15 or 16 sides per
cylinder, than the number of cylinders in a larger than 10 Gbyte disk
would exceed 1024 which should be the limit of allowable cylinders
that can be handled with interrupt 13
This question replaces the previous question which is no longer relevant.
From the following you should be able to tell what BIOS I have:
Turning on the computer gives "energy epa pollution protected,
American Megatrend, AmbiosC1996 American Megatrend
incorporated,Release10\251996S, Intel Celetron 500 Mhz, checking NVEM
16384kb
"del" gives "Ambios simple setup utility - version 1.20
C1998 American Megatrend, Inc All rights reserved.
"Standrd CMOS" setup" gives "Ambios Setup - standard CMOS setup
(C) Americam megatrends. Inc All rights reserved.
This BIOS does not recognize an 80 Gbyte disk. |
