I am looking for a poem entitled "Fiddlers' Green. It is an old
military poem. I have no idea who wrote it. It has a tree that comes
up around the wording with men and women talking and some dancing and
a horse at the top. The man that wants this said the last time he saw
it was at Ft. Riley in Kansas. Thank You!

FIDDLER'S GREEN

Halfway down the road to hell,
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.

Marching past, straight through to hell,
The infantry are seen,
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marine,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddler's Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No trooper ever gets to hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddler's Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge or fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddler's Green.

Again, please let me know if this is the one.

This is the poem. However my customer wants the art work around it
like he has seen it, and in color. Any hope?

I don't know anything about that. This poem has been around a long,
long time and what your friend remembers may have just been someone's
personal art. Hopefully someone else can round it up for you.

My customer has shown me a copy of this poem in black & white with the
art. He saw it in color at Ft. Riley and that is what I am looking
for.

Dear lmt-ga;

Well, as it turns out, your rather unusual request has proven not to
be impossible after all. I not only found an EXCEPTIONALLY beautiful
copy of the poem AND the art, but it is in color and high enough
resolution to print, too boot.

If you can't get the link to work for some reason try copying the URL
I provided and pasting it to your browser's address field (and hit
enter). I've been told that this particular domain sometimes kills
links like the one I provided but cutting and pasteing will work
around that.
