Non Programmers Newbe to Newbe Guide
How it Eliminate and or Change the Verizon Banner on the VX6000

What you need:
Verizon (LG) cable (may work w/ VX1200 cable) I don't have one
Futuredial drivers
BitPim,
WinHex
WINXP

This procedure assumes you have the Futuredial drivers installed and
working. IE: your phone is connected to your computer and they are
speaking..

1) Download and install BitPim http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/#download
2) Set the COM port. Select: Edit, Settings (do not use auto) type
COMX where X is the port your phone is connected to.
3) Before you edit anything verify the connection to your phone.
Select the Phone tab. You will see your contacts.
4) Select the File System Tab
5) Select the ?+? in the root directory.
5) Select the ?+? next to the eri directory
6) Right click eri.bin SELECT SAVE. Save the file to your computer in
a place you can find it if you need it. This is the original if you
screw things up editing the eri.bin file you can always load the
original back to your phone. I pity the fool who skips this step.
Printing the file is another layer of insurance. If you are reading
this you are probably not a programmer. Either am I. BACK IT UP AND
PRINT IT TOO!
7) Save another copy of the original eri.bin file to a working
directory. This will be the directory used to upload and download the
file to and from your phone. The other original is safely saved
somewhere else. Right?
8) Install a binary file editor like WinHex http://www.sf-soft.de/
9) Launch WinHex.
9) Select: File, Open your WORKING copy of the eri.bin file. You
should see the screen shot below. PRINT A SCREEN SHOT NOW trust me its
worth the ink.

Screen Shot - http://members.roadfly.org/02330i/ss1.jpg

10) Press F7 to view text only. You will see this:

Screen Shot - http://members.roadfly.org/02330i/ss2.jpg

11) As you read across the first line you will see an ampersand ?@?
followed by three periods. Next is the text string Verizon Wireless
followed by an uppercase A.
12) You can edit anything between the @? and the A.
In other words anything that fits in the space taken by Verizon
Wireless, 16 characters including spaces can be changed to whatever
you want. (Get it Now Sucks fits perfectly)
13) Save your edited eri.bin file to your WORKING directory. You still
have the original else ware on your hard drive. Right?
14) Launch BitPim.
15) Right click on eri.bin
16) Select Overwrite
17) Select your WORKING DIRECTORY and your new eri.bin file.
18) Reboot your phone. How do you like that?

Notes:
1) The ?periods? proceeding the Verizon Wireless text are not actually
periods. they are non printable hexadecimal characters and CAN NOT be
substituted with periods. If you accidentally overwrite or delete one
you need to replace with the correct hexadecimal characters. That is
but one reason why printing the original, step 9 PRINT IT NOW and SAVE
IT NOW, step 6 are so important.

2) MAJOR DISCLAIMER:?.I am NOT a programmer, hacker or expert at
anything . If you screw up your phone sorry. If you backup your
original eri.bin file and never edit it chances are very good you can
put your phone back to it?s original state, I have. Use caution, take
your time and it should work? Any similarity to an actual tutorial is

3) You may want to edit the Extended Network and Roaming banners as
well See Disclaimer above..

If you're not comfortable editing the file yourself, you can download
original or modified copies of the file here:
