Question ID: 419040
I am unable to access www.metlife.com or eservice.metlife.com. I am
able to access all other websites without difficulty. Everyone else
is able to access these websites with no problems. My PC is connected
to internet via cable modem but even connecting manually via dial-up
doesn't solve the issue. I went through resetting cookies,
securities, etc. and finally re-installing IE 6.0 (under Win XP Home),
ensuring that DHCP is enabled, disabling Micrososft Network and File
and Printer Sharing under Network Properties and enabling NetBIOS.
Nothing worked. I then looked up IP addresses via nslookup. I can
get IP addresses for both sites. I am then able to access
www.metlife.com by entering it's IP address, but not
eservice.metlife.com. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No problems in HOSTS. I tried winsockxpfix -- it fixed the problem
but screwed up my entire PC which required re-installation fo Windows
XP. After re-installing XP I am again unable to access metlife.com
but other error messages went away. So, sounds like WINSOCKXPFIX
fixes the problem but messes up something else. Could someone help
get to the bottom of it?

Thanks

Check your hosts file.

In case you are unfamiliar with hosts files:
http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html

In Win XP your hosts file can be found at
"C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"

It is a file without an extension that can be opened with Notepad or
any other simple text editor.

I would take a look at that file and make sure metlife.com doesn't
show up anywhere in there. If metlife.com appears in the hosts file,
delete that line or put a # in front of that line in the file and save
it (again without an extension). If you save it as a .txt file it
won't work.

Try that first and if that doesn't fix the problem we can look into
some other possible causes.

Just ran into the same problem - have not had the problem until today.
There is nothing in the hosts file that is causing the problem. I
can ping both sites using their IP address, but cannot connect to
either one with Explorer. Have not noticed any other problems with
Explorer an other sites. There were some Microsoft XP updates that
were installed since the last time I was able to access the metlife
sites that might be the cause... I have not yet tried to do a system
restore to a point before the updates.

Did some research and found the answer for my case at any rate - found
a freware program WinsockxpFix.exe and used it to repair some registry
funny. Metlife access works fine now.

I tried my metlife account and couldn't get in either. queried
"metlife login" and it brought me here. I think I've solved it. I
used favorites to go to metlife login. the old metlife url's are not
working. When typing by hand/mouse Google popup blocker is
interacting with navagation thru the new metlife site interface. It
is blocking the login page. hold the ctrl key and click link. see url
below.
NEW URL https://pilot.eservice.metlife.com/
changed my favorites and link is fine.
