I am looking for the artist and lyrics of a song that was popular in
the mid-80's (sometime around 1985-86). The chorus begins with something
similar to "All alone in a barroom". The band is similar to but is
not necessarily Social Distortion.

Hi oakmusic,

Are these the lyrics you remember?

Last night all alone in a barroom I met a girl with a drink in her hand
She had ruby red lips and coal black hair and eyes that would tempt any man
Then she came and sat down at my table and as she placed her soft hands in mine
(...)
And I was almost persuaded to let strange lips lead me on
Almost persuaded but your sweet love made me stop and go home

Best regards,
Rainbow

Thanks both to rainbow and julicollins, but we're not there yet. The
problem (like julicollins pointed out) is that the lyrics may sound
like something I remember, but not be exactly what I'm thinking.
Makes internet searching very difficult. If I could somehow sing the
lyrics here, it might make the answer more obvious (as well as
frighten whole generations of internet users). So I'll do my best to
clarify.

As I recall, the stanzas are 6 lines and have a pattern AAB AAB. The
A's have 7-8 sylables and the B's have approx 9 sylables. In the
chorus, the singer starts with a "woah ooh" and repeats "All alone in
a barroom" (if those are in fact the words) twice. Another "woah ooh"
and then the lines twice more.

I remember it getting a lot of radio play in either 1985 or 1986. I
was most likely listening to KROQ in Los Angeles back then. They were
did play Social Distortion along with a large variety of rock bands
like The Police, Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, REM, etc.

I hope any of this is helpful.

THAT'S IT!!! julicollins you are a genius!! This song has been
haunting me for over 3 years. I've asked people all over the world
about this song (yes, I did subject them to my singing) to no avail.
I finally feel I can move on with my life.

Consider the question answered with a huge debt of gratitude to julicollins

Hi Oakmusic,

Hmmm. This is a long shot.

The Pixies had a song called Here Comes Your Man.

I always thought the lyrics were "All alone in a barroom waiting" ...
and it was actually "Outside there's a boxcar waiting".

Here's the lyrics and guitar tabs:

They sound a little like Social Distortion ...

As I said, a long shot. Let me know if it's any help.

Hmmm.

Found another candidate

Band: Dramarama
Album: Cinema Verite
Released: 1985
Track: Scenario (also on The Best of Dramarama)

Lyric

Scenario
This is my scenario
Phonograph and radio
I've written everything I know
that I have ever seen.

Get it started with a bang
meet a pretty girl who sang
a famous song of love
at seventeen.

All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.
All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.

Sister's in the everglades
Mother swallows razor blades
Father makes the flags for all
the Labor Day parades.

She hangs out at the five and ten
She dates a lot of married men
They take her out and wonder when
She'll sing that song again.

All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.
All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.

This is my Scenario
Phonograph and radio
I've written everything I know
that I have ever seen.

Get it started with a bang
meet a pretty girl who sang
a famous song of love
at seventeen.

All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.
All alone in a bar room,
alone in a bar room.

****

Do we have a contender?

There's a discography and brief biog for Dramarama on the Satan Stole
My Teddybear site:

http://www.ssmt-reviews.com
http://www.ssmt-reviews.com/db/searchrev.php?artistID=352&showReview=true

And I found the lyrics here:

http://thefourth.net/l/a/Cinema%20Verite.htm

I found all of the above by Googling:

"all alone in a bar room" + lyrics.

Then I scrolled through three pages of Tammy Wynette entries.

Cheers,
