When I create a new email message or reply to an existing one in
Outlook 2004, a message pane pops up. The text in the fields labeled
"To", "From", "cc" and " Subject" are too small for me to read
comfortably. Is there a way to make the text in these fields larger
by default? (I don't want to have to load a custom form or use screen
magnification software). Ideally, I would like these fields to have
nice, readable text like that in Outlook Express's new message pane.

What screen resolution is your screen set to, and is this a problem
that you experience in other software besides Outlook?

My screen resolution is set at 1024 x 768. This problem only happens
in Outlook 2004--all other email clients, including Outlook Express,
have nice, readable text in these fields.

My apologies for the delay in getting back to your question.

The text size in the text edit boxes used by Outlook for the To:, CC:,
etc. fields is controlled by the default Message form. However, as you
probably already know, you cannot edit the default Message form. While
you can make a copy of the default Message form, setting it as the
default form to use for new messages is also messy.

The easiest way to increase the text size for the edit boxes in
question, then, is to increase the base font size for Windows itself.
However, if you do this then the base font size for ALL programs will
increase. This may not be desirable to you. If you have not already
given it a try, do the following and see if you are satisfied with the
results:

Go to Control Panel>Display
Select the Settings tab
Click the Advanced button
On the General tab, select Large Fonts (the 120 dpi option)
Reboot
Run Outlook, start composing a new message, and see if you are happy
with the overall effect of having all of your text sizes increased by
25%

Please let me know if this is a possible solution for you.

I'm already using large fonts . It's odd, every other Windows form
that comes up has nice, readable text in it. There's just something
about Outlook 2004 that produces these wretchedly small fonts in the
outgoing email form.

There is a (small) possibility that the fonts were not correctly
installed by the operating system when you switched to the large
fonts. One way to eliminate this possibility is to try changing the
font size again, selecting for example a custom size other than 120
dpi (say, 150 dpi). When you get the dialog that mentions that the
fonts are already present on your computer, select No (ie. that you
wish to re-install) and insert your Windows installation CD to
reinstall the fonts. After you reboot, check Outlook again to see if
there is any change.

Reinstalling fonts didn't work, but thanks for the suggestion.

I think this is something inherent in Outlook 2004. To see a screen
shot of the problem, go to

From everything that we've tried here, this is looking like a bug in
Outlook. The font size for that field is supposed to be based on the
default base font size for the operating system. It is clear that this
isn't working right in your case.

Another thing to check... have you updated your Outlook and/or MS
Office to the latest appropriate service pack? You can find the latest
updates at:

http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate

Incidentally, at this point it would probably be a good idea for me to
mention that the version of Outlook you are using is most likely
Outlook 2003 (the current version), not 2004. There is no documented
bug or fix dealing with this sort of issue, but that doesn't mean that
a fix wasn't slipped into an update. So, please have the Office Update
applet check for any applicable updates, and see if somehow the
problem 'magically' disappears!

aht-ga has put his finger on the problem--Office 2003 doesn't use
system fonts. Is there a way to force Office to use system fonts?

If this only happens in Outlook 2004 then it may be related to the
default font size you are using. I am not familiar with 2004 but it
is worth a try.
