I am managing a Microsoft Exchange 2003 server running on Windows
Server 2003. Recently I mail-enabled Domain Users. The address is
hidden from the GAL, and rights to send to it are limited to
membership in a group that I am a member of. When I try to send mail
to the group, typing in its e-mail address (because it is hidden from
the GAL), the message does not get delivered to anyone; there is no
bounce; and I do not get told that I have no permissions.

Instead, when I go to the Message Tracking Center on Exchange, I find
that the mail gets as far as the Categorizer - and this as far as it
gets.

When I look on the web, there are lots of people with the same issue -
and no one with a solution :-)

I have tried searching based on the idea that the problem is mailing a
builtin group - no luck. I am sure the problem is NOT the fact that
we are mailing a hidden address as I have been doing that just fine
for months with a group I created. I am also sure that it is not the
restriction on who can mail the group as this other hidden group is
restricted in the same way.

I want to be able to e-mail Domain Users - we currently have group
that is supposed to contain everyone, but admin for maintenance is a
nuisance.

I have just done the following:

1) E-mail-enabled Domain Admins - no restrictions (i.e. not hidden
and anyone can mail to it) - worked fine (though only a couple of
members of the group have e-mail addresses).

2) Removed mail-enablement from Domain Users and re-enabled it
without restrictions. It still does not work. Still hangs in
Categorizer.

3) I note that, using Outlook 2003, when you put in a group-name,
you get a +-sign and can expand the group. When I expand Domain
Users, only one user appears - and that user is one who has not got an
e-mail address on the user object.

Hmm... I wonder if it is some sort of number-of-users issue??

PS - FWIW, there are about 750 user objects in Domain Users.

Problem turns out to be MS bug - Categorizer does an LDAP query of the
AD for the DNs of members of the group - and it ONLY returns DNs for
members for whom this group is NOT the Primary Group. Since most
users have Domain Users set as their Primary Group, the LDAP query
does not return them.

Cancelling the query so you don't get the twenty bucks :-)
