Good afternoon tarajordan-ga and thank you for allowing me to answer
this question for you. To answer the second part of your questions
first, the four periods of development are:
1. Infancy
2. Preschool years
3. Middle childhood years,
4. Adolescence
I was disturbed to find out that one of the major health concerns
during childhood development is malnutrition. It is caused by both
undereating or overeating. Malnutrition can lead to a multitude of
health problems for children - including (but not limited to)
respiratory infections, kidney failure, blindness, heart attack and
death. Government statistics show that more than 60% of the diseases
we develop later in life are related to diet.
"The major health threats to children are accidents and infection;
asthma is the most common chronic condition; and anaemia due to iron
deficiency is the most common nutritional problem."
Iron deficiency anaemia is a blood disorder that that most commonly
occurs in the first 10 years. It is a potentially serious problem in
this age group because iron is essential for normal physical and
mental development and for resistance to infection.

Another health concern that starts early in childhood development, is
the risk of skin cancer. With one in five Americans developing skin
cancer, childhood education about sun protection is a vital step
toward reducing risk. Studies have concluded that sun exposure,
especially sunburn, during childhood appears to increase the risk of
melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.
Children are of particular concern because they spend a lot of time
outdoors. Skin cancer and other UV-related adverse health effects are
largely preventable if sun protection practices are followed early and
consistently.
