The term "Anglo-Saxon" has two connected, but rather distinct, meanings. On the one hand, it refers to the people of German origin who occupied part of England in the 5th century, who are the subject of the website quoted by gp1-ga. More recently, however, the term is also used for the people of countries colonised originally by British people (though also by many other nationals) whose language is English. Thus, the US, Canada, Australia etc are often described as "Anglo-Saxon nations", though I suspect that many of the nationals of those countries deeply resent this terminology. |
