Southern Africa seems to be the wealthier region. Mauritius was the richest (per capita) that I saw in a list at the CIA World Factbook with a GDP per capita of $11,400. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html Mauritius has a 42% literacy rate, but finding their official education is much harder to do. This is the website for Mauritius at the Factbook, and you can use the dropdown menu at the top to go to any other country in Africa (or the world). Lots of good info to be read. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ao.html South Africa would have been my guess for having the wealthiest people in Africa, but they rank slightly below Mauritius with a GDP per capita of $10,700. It's interesting to note that South Africa's literacy rate is 86.4%, much higher than Mauritius'. |
