I am 22 years old and a female. My chest is always red and I always
have small pimples on my chest and upper back around the shoulder
area. I do not go out in the sun that much and when I am out in the
sun, I am always completely covered. I wanted to know how I can make
my chest look more like the rest of my skin. I have a fair complexion
and I do not have any pimples on my face. I would also like to know
how to stop breaking out on my back. Thanks.

"Acne commonly appears on the face and shoulders, but may also occur
on the trunk, arms, legs, and buttocks.

Acne is most common in teenagers, but it can happen at an age, even as
an infant. Three out of four teenagers have acne to some extent,
probably caused by hormonal changes that stimulate oil production. It
may persist into a person's 30's and 40's.

Acne tends to run in families and can be triggered by:

Hormonal changes related to menstrual periods, pregnancy, birth
control pills, or stress
Greasy or oily cosmetic and hair products
Certain drugs (such as steroids, testosterone, estrogen, and phenytoin)
High levels of humidity and sweating
Despite the popular belief that chocolate, nuts, and other foods cause
acne, this does not seem to be true."

It looks like pils, drugs, oily substances, and sweating are the major
causes. Check out your lifestyle and see if you can avoid any of
these, hopefully that will reduce the problem. I used to get acne on
my back but it slowly cleared up over the years to a minimum (but
still existing a little) around age 24.

Here's a weird suggestion for you... Do you wash (with soap) the
areas where the pimples appear? If so, try not washing them. My
brother used to have some kind of reaction on his upper arms when he
washed them with soap. It cleared up when he quit washing there. The
skin of the chest is very sensitive, so I can easily imagine you
having a reaction there to soap.

If it really is acne rather than a reaction to chemicals, there are a
variety of prescription acne treatments that can be used (from topical
creams to oral antibiotics to accutane). You'd have to see a
dermatologist for any of those.

Folliculitis, maybe? In my opinion your best bet is to ask your doctor.

I would check out http://www.acnehelper.com/ they have some
information about acne. It seems, though, that a combination of
gylcolic acid and benzoyl peroxide seems to work well on the back
although the combination of both might be too strong for the facial
area.

Good luck!

Have you tried changing soaps? The reason I ask is some soaps provide
oils that benefit the skin, while some commerical soaps are just a
chemical detergent that strips the skin of vital nourishment. I would
suggest trying a more natural or organic soap one free of most
chemicals. Try an unscented soap or plain soap, goats milk homemade
soaps are fairly easy to find unscented and natural.
www.craftedsoap.com has some of those to try. If it continues once you
have changed soaps and soap types, contact a professional doctor and
seek more medical information.

To health_help-ga: Can you tell me what product I should buy?

Well there are several products I would recommend you trying. Not
knowing which you have tried or not already makes this a wider
approach. If your at www.craftedsoap.com they offer An Ultra Gentle
Baby soap or the unscented regular goats milk soap. If your skin is
getting that from excess oils, increasing the cleaning regiment might
work for you as well. If you have not yet consulted a medical staff
member, after the washings and soap changes I would recommend visiting
them as well for possible topical ointments to try and reduce the
issue.
