I am still trying to find out information about the Old Georgetown Estate. I have over the last couple of weeks learned a lot about the estate. But I am still very interested trying to zero in to find more information. I know that it was estate belonging to Luke and Helen Wilson who owned over 200 acres of the property that is now owned by NIH. What I still would like to know does anyone out thier have any access to get Luke and Helen's written obituary or articles written in newspapers about the property. Also any other tibets of information to help me put the history of the property together would be greatly appreciated too. I have already tired contacting the Montgomery County historical society but they weren't very help as they didn't have anything new which I didn't already know. I am sorry to replete my question like this but this service seems to help me get the answer to my question quickly and accuracy. Any addition information you could give me I would greatly appreciate it. |

Hi stephenh-ga, I'm a professional genealogist and find it wonderful that you are trying to learn the history of the Georgetown estate, "Treetops." Old houses have so many interesting stories to tell! I did read back through your earlier questions and just wanted to make a few comments in an effort to help you find the information that you seek. To answer your question with any type of confidence a researcher is going to need to go to local libraries, courthouses, and archives to do research in old deeds, wills, census records, newspapers, etc. I don't want to discourage you in any way, but this is a lot more work than you are likely to find someone willing to do for $4. If you are truly interested in learning about the history of this house, you are either going to need to go to those places to do the research yourself (I get the impression that you don't live in the area, however?) or hire a professional researcher. For help with hiring a professional who specializes in the Bethesda area and/or house histories I would recommend that you visit the Web site of the Association of Professional Genealogists and search their member directory. You can narrow down your search by geographical area, specialties, etc. http://www.apgen.org/directory/index.php For tips on how to select a professional genealogist: http://genealogy.about.com/cs/professionalselect/ The Maryland State Archives also offers a research service: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/html/feesched.html The history of the house itself, as well as its owners, can be found in a number of records. Here are a few to get you started: 1) Land Deeds (your best first step is to do a title search and trace the ownership of the land/house back in time), Wills/Probate Records, Census Records, Utility Records, the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, maps, architectural surveys, county histories, etc. You can learn more about how to conduct a house history from the following sources: Researching a Historic Property http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/publications/bulletins/nrb39_toc.htm House Histories - Tracing the Genealogy of Your Home http://genealogy.about.com/library/weekly/aa070802a.htm One last tip - a search on the house by its name (especially on the Internet) won't yield everything. You need to search by address, physical location (i.e. deed description), and owners' names. I hope this helps to get you started. Best of luck with your quest! Regards, inquisitive-ga |

Thank you for responding to me. I love your answers you gave me. I am not really interested in knowing about the Old Georgetown "tree top" estate house itself but I am more interesting in knowing about the family itself. Who were the Wilsons why were they famous in the area at the time. If I wanted to hire you to get both Luke Wilson and Helen Wilson full obituary how much would you charge me. If it isn't a super amount of money. I might hire you do that for me. I don't want to pay more than $15.00 at the max. Is this something possible. Please do let me know. |

http://www.nih.gov/news/NIH-Record/05_29_2001/story01.htm This is probably not as much info as you are looking for, but it's a beginning. Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Wilson appear to be famous for their inherited riches. Mrs. Wilson was the last surviving Woodward (Woodward & Lothrop stores) and Luke was heir to the Wilson Brothers (Chicago clothiers) fortune. |
