Someone told me that the RNC is paying people in OH $100 to work at polling stations and specifically 'ensure' that people aren't voting illegally by making sure that IDs are checked, etc. The description he gave bordered on harassment. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/23/politics/campaign/23vote.html I want to make sure that people in OH (and other states) are not being intimidated from voting, are not excessively being asked for IDs if they are not required and are not turned away from the polls if they are registered. I was considering flying to a swing state this weekend to help with this task but a friend pointed out to me that the money I would spend on the trip might be better spent by hiring people in those states to work at the polls. I could donate money to the DNC, ACLU or MoveOn, but I want to make sure my money is actually going to go specifically to this cause (and not some general pool). My question is twofold: 1. Are there any groups specifically concerned with illegal disenfranchment (especially but not exclusively of minority groups) that are paying people to work at the polls for this cause? Do any of them have specific donation pools designated for this cause (ie if I give money, will it directly affect how many workers they hire or how many people they can help?). 2. Would it be legal for me to call up a career center at a school in a swing state and offer to pay students $100 a day to work on election day (most likely as a 'volunteer') for the DNC or another organization? | |
