Hi asktomuch,
Streptococcus is a genus of gram positive aerobic (like oxygen, and
needs it for survival) or microaerophillic (Likes decreased oxygen)
bacteria, that is best known for causing ?strep? throat. Strep can
also cause numerous other infectious diseases such as toxic shock
syndrome, necrotizing fasciitis, impetigo, Looking at them under the
microscope, they are often seen in grape-like clusters, in pairs, or
in chains. The morphology, or the shape the bacteria take, as seen
under the microscope help in determining the species of strep, such as
s.pyogenes, s.viridians, s.pneumoniae , or the other 6,000 strains of
strep!

Streptococcus should not be confused with ?streptomyces?, a species of
the Actinomycetes genus. Streptomyces are bacteria, but they resemble
a thin, filamented fungus. Streptomyces spores are used to make
numerous antibiotics, some of which include: streptomycin, neomycin,
vancomycin, and bacitracin.
