Branson uses the 'Virgin' as a Brand name - and cashes in on it.
- he goes into joint ventures with others, where his contribution is the name
- the partner company does the grunt work

For example Virgin banking was originally really the Royal Bank of
Scotland, and Virgin Cola was really Cotts.

Interestingly Virgin Airlines is currently at least 50% owned by
Singapore Airlines.

My personal view is that the 'Empire' is largely a franchise operation.
