I own a Sailor's woolwork picture of HMS Alexander dating from around
1875. I would like to find out more information about this particular
Royal Navy ship and not previous or later Alexander's. The information
would be when and where built. The size and details on where she
operated.

Is this the ship pictured in your woolwork piece?

I have found no record of any other HMS Alexander. Indeed, it is my
impression that ships' names are not habitually reused by the Royal
Navy. The woolwork, though it dates from a later period, may be a
reproduction of a prior image of the HMS Alexander.

If I have indeed identified the right ship, I will be able to give you
further information on it.

I have found only one reference in the Times newspaper .circa 1850 to
HMS Alexander (I presume a newer one than the ship of the Nelson era).
There are, however, numerous references and information on HMS
Alexandra, an iron clad. Are you sure of the name?
