I've created a software. My first language is not English so I would appreciate feedback on the grammar, syntax and structure of the software description. This description will be used on download sites. Specifically, I want the following answers: 1) Corrected grammar, structure, syntax, etc. 2) Is 'Media' an appropriate word in English to refer to movies, pictures and music files in the computer world? If not, what word(s) should I use instead? 3) Do these description make sense to you? What do you think the software does? I have provided a 45, 80, 250, 450 and (up to) 2000 characters descriptions. 45 characters description: "BeaverMF : Automated Media Downloading." 80 characters description: "BeaverMF searches and downloads movies, pictures & music on the Web." 250 characters description: "BeaverMF automatically searches and downloads movies, pictures and music on the web. Organize your pictures with the slideshow mode and see them in fullscreen. Use the prebuilt categories or make your own search criterias." 450 characters description: "BeaverMF searches and downloads movies, pictures and music on the web. Downloading is performed automatically in the background. Watch the files while they download. Organize your pictures with the slideshow mode and see them in fullscreen. Use the prebuilt categories or make your own search criterias. With the adult protection feature, BeaverMF will prevent your family from unauthorized access to the files and the media you have downloaded." 2000 characters description: "BeaverMF searches and downloads movies, pictures and music on the web. Downloading is performed automatically in the background. Watch the files while they download. Organize your pictures with the slideshow mode and see them in fullscreen. Use the prebuilt categories or make your own search criterias. With the adult protection feature, BeaverMF will prevent your family from unauthorized access to the files and the media you have downloaded. BeaverMF is easy to setup and get started. In a few minutes you could be already downloading pictures and movies on your computer. You can customize your search session in multiple ways by choosing which URLs you want to download from. You can add keywords to be ignored or that must be present on the websites. File sizes and media type can be customized to download only a specific part of a website. Intelligent duplicate handling when two files with the same name but different sizes are found. The built-in File Manager works like Explorer and allow you to see and organize your files. The built-in Picture Viewer allows you to see your pictures in a thumbnails form with a preview area. You can also see your pictures in Full Screen where you can setup a slide-show mode. The slide-show can be customized with a time-delay so that different pictures are shown over-time." |

"BeaverMF" is a great name!

Congratulations, your English is not bad at all. The shorter descriptions contain sentence fragments, but given the informal and abbreviated context, that seems ok to me. Here are my suggestions. Good luck with your venture. BeaverMF is easy to setup and get started. In just a few minutes you can be downloading pictures and movies. Customize your search session in multiple ways by specifying file size and media type, multiple URLs, or required/excluded keywords. BeaverMF also offers the intelligence to identify and screen duplicate files, saving you time and bandwidth. BeaverMF?s File Manager works like Explorer and allows you to see and organize your files. The built-in Picture Viewer allows you to preview your pictures as thumbnails. Or use Full Screen mode to set up a slide-show where you may specify the allotted time for each picture. |

This is very minor, but in the sentence "You can also see your pictures in Full Screen where you can setup a slide-show mode," you should use "set up" rather than "setup." "Setup" is a noun. The verb form is two words. Since you have used "slideshow" in the previous, briefer descriptions, it would be best to continue to use "slideshow" rather than "slide-show." The word "slideshow," although commonly used on the Web, doesn't yet appear in most dictionaries; to be conservative, you may want to go with "slide show" (no hyphen). |

I think that "multimedia" would work better for you than "media." "Criteria" is already plural. (It's the plural of "criterion.") "Criterias" is not a word. Your grammar is better than that of many native English speakers! :) |

Thanks guys, that was quick and efficient! I didn't see any comment about the first paragraph of the 2000 words description. Does that mean that paragraph is perfect? Here it is for reference: "BeaverMF searches and downloads movies, pictures and music on the web. Downloading is performed automatically in the background. Watch the files while they download. Organize your pictures with the slideshow mode and see them in fullscreen. Use the prebuilt categories or make your own search criterias. With the adult protection feature, BeaverMF will prevent your family from unauthorized access to the files and the multimedia you have downloaded." |

Pretty good, but no, not quite perfect. I'd do it thus: "BeaverMF searches .... categories or make your own search criteria [take off the 's' - criteria is already the plural of criterion]. With the adult protection feature, BeaverMF will prevent your family from [gaining or 'getting' or 'having'or 'obtaining']unauthorized access to the files and the multimedia you have downloaded [OR --if you'd rather not use the verb form, then: "will keep your family from unauthorized access"]." |
