I live in the San Francisco area and am interested in taking a class
to learn how to arc weld. The classes listed at
http://www.thecrucible.org/classes/welding.html look good except that
they are full for months, and I'm interested in finding something
soon. I'd prefer weekend classes.

I would like for you to provide a list of suitable classes in my area
(or, if there are alternate solutions, I'm open to creative options -
but I do not have infinite amounts of money). Ideally you would be
able to confirm that the classes you mention have not yet filled up.

Greetings! Welding is a skill I would like to learn, too, but I live
far from Califormia. However, I did find a few classes in SF that may
be useful for your needs.

Searching "basic welding class san francisco" I found a class at Las
Positas , and the class description opens with "This class introduces
students to the Oxyacetylene process of welding. Artists/hobbyists
wishing to learn welding techniques are welcome. Instruction covers
basic welding safety, as well as welding techniques used in
sculpturing various types of metal. Learn how to hand-form cold metal
to achieve a desired effect. Class may be taken with or without
previous welding experience." This may prove to be to your liking.

Las Positas welding class

More description shows it is arc welding: "Terry White has been
teaching the phenomenal AL 119, Art Welding since the Spring of 2000.
He started out with one session of 6 Saturdays, and now teaches 2
sessions each Fall and Spring, spanning the entire Las Positas College
year."

The search term "welding class san francisco" turned up a news story
about a mayor's visit to City College. I could find no welding class
at the City College web site, but another City College site had
contact information:

City College of San Francisco
50 Phelan Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94112
(415) 239-3000

The link to their welding class page I found through a site search is
http://www.ccsf.edu/Pub/Search/cgi-bin/htsearch.cgi?config=htsearch&restrict=%2F&method=and&format=builtin-long&sort=score&matchesperpage=10&words=welding

San Francisco Art Institute also offers sculpture classes which
include welding:
"Sculpture Facilities - The department also has facilities for welding
and finishing steel and other metals, including gas, arc and heli-arc
welding, plasma cutting, vacuum forming and spray painting." Visit
http://www.sfai.edu/admissions/facilities.html for more information on
the school.

Ideally, I was not able to ascertain if classes at any of these were
full for the fall semester. Were I you, I would contact a local
construction union and query members who weld if they would give
private instruction at their home on weekends. From studying other
class costs you can estimate a fair price to pay them per hour, and if
you are a quick study you wouldn't spend too much to learn the craft.

I hope this information assists you in your quest.

Note: The description for the Las Positas class indicates that it
covers Oxyacetylene welding, which is different from the requested arc
welding.
