Hi bprater,
Thanks for your interesting question!
I perused a number of sites and articles on blog promotion, and found
a number of useful tips. Those that frequently recurred include the
following:
Post regularly. By most accounts, the more often you post, even as
much as two or three times daily, the better. According to Biz Stone,
in an article titled "Promoting your blog," ?You've got to think about
it like watering a plant ? do it every day and the plant will grow.?

Quality over quantity. It may seem I?m contradicting the above, but
stay with me here. :) While it's good to post often, many accuse the
top bloggers of gaining and maintaining their status by talking a lot
but not saying much ? that is, posting lightweight material
super-frequently. Post regularly, but ensure you?re not posting
sub-par material simply to increase your traffic. On a similar note,
keep your posts relatively short so as not to lose the reader?s
interest.
Add your blog URL to your email signature and business cards. If
you?re a diehard blogger, you may even want to consider having
stickers, bumper stickers or other promotional items printed up. The
email signature, at the very least, is a must ? free advertising, and
if a contact forwards a particularly brilliant communiqué to someone
else, its reach is exponential.
Archive strategically, with each archived post on a separate post page
(see more about this in Biz Stone?s article). Give each page a unique
title and keywords, and reap the search engine traffic you attract.
Leave a cybertrail. When you comment generously on other bloggers?
postings, your URL appears all over the place.
Advertise. BlogSnob (http://blogsnob.simpleads.net) is a network of
free, text-based blog advertisers. It?s a give-and-take model ?- in
exchange for placing ads, you host other bloggers? ads. The ads are
customizable and fairly non-obtrusive. Another essential step is
submitting your blog to blog search sites and directories like
Daypop(.com) and Blogdex(.net).
Finally, pretty it up. Attractive, functional site design is a must.

Hi bprater,
Thanks for your clarification request! It sounds like you're having
trouble deciding on the focus of your blog. Ask yourself what you want
to accomplish; do you want to increase your software sales, advise
fledgling software developers, or something else entirely? The
following article may help you clarify your theme:
"Choosing the Topic of your Blog" by Oleg Lazarenko
<http://www.livingroom.org.au/problogger/archives/choosing_the_topic_of_your_blog.php>
The writing isn't the best - sounds like English might be the writer's
second language - but the points he makes are good. As Lazarenko
points out, a Google user will get millions of results if they type in
something as broad as "computer programming" or "software
development." By choosing something a bit more specific, like
"high-tech office culture" or "new developments in virus scanning,"
you'll have a better chance of standing out. At the same time, you
don't want to go too specific, as the chances of someone searching on
"streaming audio use by recreational skydivers," to give a really bad
example :), is pretty slim.
Hope this has helped you out. All the best!
