Hello goldfinch-ga,

I've found a number of sources of information on Schlichter -- in
English and German -- and on Otto Steinicke, who had numerous written
works published, and appears to have done some drawings of his own.

However, unless you know the specific name of the Schlichter picture
you're looking for, it's hard to know if information about it can be
found.

Schlichter is still quite a well-known artist, and his works are in
collections all over the world. I don't think there's a single
catalog of his works that would tell you where each and every picture
is located.

Given these limitations, can you tell us a bit more about how we can
best assist you? It may be that steering you towards sources of
information on Schlichter (and on Steinicke, if these are of interest)
may be the best way to go, without a more precise identification of
the picture you're looking for.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thank you for your swift response. Schlichter (first name?) did a
double portrait, a drawing, I think, of my parents Otto Steinicke and
Margot Opfer, possibly before they were married in 1928 in Berlin. If
it is not possible to find this, I should be glad of information about
where to fiud any of Schlichter's work in Berlin or London or
elsewhere in the UK.

I look forward to hearing froim youy again, goldfinch-ga

Hello goldfinch-ga,

Rudolf Schlichter is a fairly well-known German artist with a style
reminiscent of his more famous contemporary, Geroge Grosz.

You can see a good sampling of Schlichter's works via a Google Images
search on the artist's name:

http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=rudolf+schlichter

Two links worth noting in particular are the photograph of a young
Schlichter with some of his pals:

http://snipurl.com/af5w

and the pen and ink drawing at this link:

http://snipurl.com/af5y

which (at one time, at least) was hanging in a London gallery:

Figures at a Café Table c. 1924
Schlichter, Rudolf
1890 - 1955

24.3/4 x 19.3/4 inches

E-Mail: art@piccadillygall.demon.co.uk

The above drawing illustrates the key problem of tracking down the
particular picture you're looking for. The people in the drawings are
not always identified.

If a picture comes to be named "Portrait of [So-and-So], then the
person portrayed in it can be readily identified...otherwise, such
identification can be quite elusive.

==========

A fair amount has been written about Schlicter as well, and some of
the books are rich with illustrations of his work. You may want to
order some of these books, or track them down through a library.

For instance, a search on his name at [ www.amazon.com ] results in
more than 100 books (many in German, but quite a few in English as
well).

A Google search for books on Schlichter also turns up quite a number of hits:

://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=rudolf+schlichter+isbn

Note that near the top of the results page is an option to " Search
for English results only", in case you want to eliminate most of the
foreign language listings.

==========

There's a nice overview of Schlichter's life, work, and bibliography at:

http://spaightwoodgalleries.com/Pages/Schlichter.html

==========

Here's an italian gallery that features some of Schlichter's works:

http://www.incisione.com/opere/opere.php?cognome=schlichter

and here's mention of a picture of his in the Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin:

http://www.usc.edu/schools/annenberg/asc/projects/comm544/library/images/719.html

==========

If you search here on the name [ Schlichter ]:

http://www.signaturehelp.com/

you'll get a list of a number of auction houses that have (or recently
sold) some of Schlichter's works. Quite a number of the auction
houses are in Europe (note that the list -- which only shows a few
results per page -- goes on for several pages).

Similar results can be seen at the wonderful Artprice site:

http://web.artprice.com/start.aspx?l=en

again, by searching on the artist's name.

Artprice lists 186 Drawings, 17 paintings, and 70 posters for
Schlichter, and is perhaps the richest listing of his works you'll
find in a single place. I perused these for mention of your parents'
names, but did not see them noted. However, you may want to have a
look yourself.

To see detailed information on any of the pieces listed at Artprice,
you would have to sign up to their service for a monthly or annual
fee.

==========

I hope this information is enough to give you a fairly comprehensive
start to your search for Schlichter's works, and for your parents'
picture.

Before rating this answer, however, please let me know if there is
anything else I can help you with. Just post a Request for
Clarification, and I'll be happy to assist you further.

All the best,
