Question ID: 42459
System: NT6 sp6
Program: Outlook express 6.00.2600.0000

I tried to export from outlook express, but got an error message:
"The export could not be performed
An error occurred while initializing MAPI"
The knowledge article telling me to restart, change from default mail
client to not, did not help.

What I would like is a (free?) program that can read IE and NS mail
folders and create valid import files for Notes client 5.06 -
preferably ignoring any duplicates from when I imported NS into IE
Address books is a bonus.

Thanks

Hi mplungjan,

"Address Magic Personal Edition" may just be the software you are
looking for.

Address Magic is an address book conversion tool that allows users to
convert address books between the following formats:

"- Microsoft Outlook 97, 98, 2000, and 2002.
- Netscape 3.x and 4.x.
- Outlook Express
- Windows Address Book/WAB
- Outlook Personal Address Book/PAB
- Lotus Notes 4.6.4 or later and R5"
(This is a condensed list - for a full list please see the citation
below)
"Address Magic Personal Edition Features"
http://www.connectedsw.com/AmFeatures.html

In addition, Address Magic will check for duplicate address entries
when converting, as you requested.

Unfortunately, Address Magic Personal Edition costs $29.95, however a
demo version is available at:

"Address Magic Personal Edition Demo Software"
http://www.connectedsw.com/AmDemo.html

The demo limits you to 15 contacts per copy (only the first fifteen
are copied).

Unfortunately, I was unable to locate any free software for the
conversion process.

I hope this information is of assistance to you, and I welcome
clarification requests, ratings and other feedback.

I am deeply sorry about my misunderstanding of your question.
However, I have done additional research, and come up with a few
applications that meet your needs:

"UniAccess"
http://www.comaxis.com/ua.htm

This software allows conversion of mail between the following
platforms:

"Exchange, Outlook, Notes, Netscape, Eudora, IMAP4, Pegasus Mail, MHS,
ExpressIT, GroupWise, cc:Mail (archives and folders), daVinci e-Mail,
Notework, Compuserve, Calypso"
http://www.comaxis.com/ua.htm

"ForMorph"
http://www.fkeeps.com/fmorph/fmindex.htm

Formorph allows you to convert mail, and also checks for duplicates as
requested.

Also, you may want to check out Microsoft's page on the error you are
receiving in Outlook - this may be a solvable problem and then there
is no need to purchase any conversion software.

"Q179637 - OLEXP: MAPI Error Messages When You Import or Export
Messages"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q179637

I hope this helps,

I am sorry.
I ended up doing the following:

1. install outlook
2. export FROM outlook express TO oulook (the other way around did not
work)
3. Install Netscape 4.7
4. IMPORT outlook (not very practical and prone to crashes)
5. Have our is department import the netscape mail files using binary
tree software.

I will ask for a refund instead of giving a low rating

I ended up fixing my own problem as stated in a comment...

Would http://mbx2mbox.sourceforge.net/
help you? Once the mail is in standard
mailbox format, other tools should accept
it.

"The knowledge article telling me to restart, change from default mail
client to not, did not help."

Anyway, I will look at the two programs...
